Eduardo is Pritzker Prize 2011’s winner…President Obama once wanted to be an architect!

Yes, in Barack Obama’s latest speech on a dinner in honour of Pritzker Prize winner for year 2011, Eduardo Souto de Moura, the President of the United States admitted that he once wanted to become an architect. This is a fantastic news…

As you might not know, Pritzker Prize is the prize of highest honour to architect, which can be known as the Nobel Prize in architectural field. Around two months ago, a Portuguese architect, named Eduardo Souto de Moura is awarded the prize for his great contribution to the world of architecture. I do not who he is because he isn’t as famous as some other architects whom had also won the prize before like Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, etc.

After I have seen some of his astonishing works, I found out that his works are rather monumental, simplicity with unique ability to convey seemingly conflicting characteristics — power and modesty, bravado and subtlety, bold public authority and a sense of intimacy at the same time. Anyway, I’m still do not know much on his architectural style or principle, hence I can’t get to understand on what he is trying to achieve from his works in architecture.

Back to the point stressed from the title of this post…yes, President Barack Obama attended the dinner in honor of this successful living architect. There are also press mentioning that Obama turned to politics because he thought that his creativity is not as good as he expected to become a successful architect. On his speech, he praised Eduardo’s simple shapes and clean lines that fit seamlessly to the surroundings. The president also took time to highlight on the architect’s work of Braga Stadium (picture above) which he commended for making the games accessible even to those who couldn’t afford a ticket, just like his beloved Wrigley Field. His other notable work is Paula Rego Museum which is seen as a bulky structure for me (picture above).

Now, I realized there are so many famous stars (like Brad Pitt whom is now a Hollywood star, or even in Asia like Raymond Lam whom is now excelling on his acting and singing career) now whom had a wish in their past to become architects. Why do they give up their dream? Probably because of the heavy workload encountered and number of sleepless nights going to be faced, so they are scared of it already and willing to go on other direction, and yet they turned successful too. Should I? No…this is already my last year…it would be too late and very regretful if I’m giving up now….have to stay on and tough to face ARCHITECTURE! Then, who knows, I might be the future recipient of this Pritzker Prize….(okay, started dreaming already…)

The King’s Speech vs The Social Network

I have watched both of the movies mentioned above, and it seems there will be a serious fight between them in the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards or well known as Oscar. Both are the current hottest contenders for the Best Picture of the year, to be revealed this Sunday’s night (Monday’s morning in Malaysia).

The official nominees for the Best Picture are:

Black Swan – definitely going to watch it by this week as it received critical acclaim and high appraisal for Natalie Portman.

The Fighter – no interest on this kind of movie.

Inception – one of the best for the year, in music, in visual effects, and in original screenplay too (brilliant idea).

The Kids Are All Right – not available yet in Malaysia.

The King’s Speech – an epic historical drama film, but for me, it’s not the best for the year.

127 Hours – a movie based on a true story with brilliant performance by the one and only main cast, James Franco.

The Social Network – a movie on Facebook founding that leaves a great impact on the modern society with focus on friendship. The best of the year.

Toy Story 3 – a very touching animated film with great adventure.

True Grit – Not interested in this type of movie.

Winter’s Bone – Not available yet in Malaysia.

Out of the 10, I have watched 5, and will turn to 6 by end of this week before the Academy Awards presentation night. This is the first time I have been focusing so much on this awards, the biggest in film industry because I have watched many of those nominated films, so I have great interest on it for this year (based on movies released in 2010).

I have created a post on the official nomination list of the 83rd Academy Awards, to be hosted by young stars, James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

https://vincentloy.wordpress.com/2011/01/26/83rd-academy-awards-oscar-2011-nomination-list/

That post also includes my predictions and my favourite picks (which are separated). I believed for each year, the results that are announced are not fully satisfying. Same goes to this year.

Before the Oscar, there have been many awards (some I have not even heard before), and their picks go to either The King’s Speech and The Social Network. The King’s Speech won a lot, especially at British Annual Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) while The Social Network won big in Golden Globes Awards. However, if we checked on the statistics, The King’s Speech won more than The Social Network.

Before The King’s Speech, it is only The Social Network that steals the media attention for its brilliant acting, adapted screenplay, directing, editing and original score. After the release of The King’s Speech, everyone turned to this epic historical drama film, while there are only a bit of attention on the other nominees. A bit unfair, and predictable, that The King’s Speech will win the Best Picture at the Oscar.

The Social Network still has the chance to take the most prestigious award home. For me, I seriously like this movie a lot. For me, it’s not only the best picture of the year, but also among the best for the past ten years. I believed many people like The Social Network more than The King’s Speech, but they have to predict The King’s Speech to win because they have known the style of Oscar voters who are more into The King’s Speech. Of course, these predictors do not wish their predictions wrong, so they picked The King’s Speech rather than their own favourite, The Social Network.

For the Best Actor, the main fight is still between Colin Firth from The King’s Speech and Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network. Same case as for the Best Picture category. Colin Firth lost last year, and so he will definitely going to win this year, unless Oscar wanted to give us a surprise. Colin’s acting is good as the King, but just not as perfect as Jesse as Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg. His character is more outstanding. This is the first time Jesse received an Oscar nomination and I think he is already well satisfied with that. He even won some smaller awards in Best Actor category for his impressive role in The Social Network. Oscar will definitely thinks that he is too young (28 years old) for their Best Actor award. Oh..please, age is not a factor! The acting is the main point! If Colin lost last year, why everyone want to give the award to him this year despite there is no breakthrough in his performance.

Jesse and Colin chatting at the Oscar Luncheon:

For the Best Actress category, I think there is no fight at all, as everyone is looking forward to Natalie Portman‘s excellent performance in Black Swan, the movie I’m anticipating for this Oscar week. Same case for the Best Animated Film, which will definitely goes to Toy Story 3. A bit weird that Tangled and Despicable Me are not in the nomination. Nothing much to say for Best Supporting Actor as my favourite, Andrew Garfield from The Social Network is not nominated. He did a good job in the film alongside with Jesse Eisenberg.

From left to right: Jesse Eisenberg and Colin Firth for Best Actor, and Natalie Portman for Best Actress.

Many have already confirmed that David Fincher is going to win Best Director for The Social Network and Aaron Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay. As for Best Original Score, there is a slight fight between The Social Network and Inception, but I think Oscar would prefer The Social Network as they do not like sci-fi based music too much. For many other categories, I’m not interested.

So, finally, what I think is that The Social Network will not win the Best Picture while there are many other not-so-prestigious awards waiting for it. The King’s Speech is going to win Best Picture (eventhough I disagreed but have to accept this upcoming fact) and Best Actor, and some others, probably not more than four. The King’s Speech is definitely going to lost in Best Supporting Actor and Actress category (to be honest). Anyway, both films will win big at the star-studded night.

The official movie trailers for The King’s Speech and The Social Network:

You have to really watch this two movies and judge on your own, which is better? I have to accept the fact that everyone has different opinions.

So, here is basically my summary of my predictions and all those things about Oscar. Nominated in the Oscar is already a gift, winning it is like a gift above a gift, a prestigious one. I really hoped that the Oscar voters really think and decide well in voting, as their votes decide the winners and the losers on this most important film awards. Ohh, I want to watch the awards presentation! Can I watch it live in Malaysia? Most probably no…too bad….

For The Social Network, you are still the best movie of the year for me and many of us!

Movie review: The King’s Speech

Many people have given very positive feedbacks on this movie after I have seen some of the movie reviews of it. It is also considered to be one of the best films of 2010. I have written a post not long ago on the top 3 best films of 2010, and that doesn’t include The King’s Speech because I haven’t watch it.

Now, I have watched it, but I would still maintain the list I have proposed before in my previous post. The King’s Speech is a good movie, but for me, it’s still far behind from being included in top 3. Yes, it totally deserved to be in top 10 then.

The King’s Speech is a movie of great quality. The storyline is very interesting, and there is no way that people can have any words of improvement on it. It is about a man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, he received help from a speech therapist named Lionel Logue. As a result of unlikely friendship, the king is able to find his voice and boldly leads the country through war.

The pace and rhythm of the story is fantastic. Well, another point I wished to add is on the brilliant performances by the casts, especially the character of the king portrayed by Colin Firth. He must had hard time speaking out his lines in a terrible way as needed for the character. Good job. Both of the points above definitely on The King’s Speech left me speechless, but with only these two positive points, it is hard to climb into top 3 list.

Many parts of the movie, eventhough seems to be very essential for the development of the story, are created in a way that makes people bored. It seems to be a long 2-hours movie for me, wishing that it would ends much early. Nothing much more to comment on this movie. A good quality movie but not the best one. Out of 10 points, I give this one 7.5. Sorry for many people who loved this movie a lot, but it’s just my opinion.

Tun Dr. Mahathir in my campus today

Today I have reached my campus, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology at Cyberjaya around 8.40am. Usually by this time, there will be ample of parking spaces…

but for today, no more…all parking spaces are full and I had to find a prettyfar area for my Proton Saga…the excitement can be felt straight at the guard house where the guards wear smartly and ordering cars, something like that…

Entering to the plaza decorated with drums and red carpet, I saw a lot of people especially staff waiting there, all wear in formal attires, well there are some performers wearing attires of different ethnics stading there too…many people including me wondering there…

Why is that so? Haha…Because our most respectable former prime minister of Malaysia is coming today, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, to receive his doctorate in humanity from my university..

tribute_tun_mahathir

I can see that a lot of preparations have been done, upgrading and repair works, decorating works, welcoming, etc…the most obvious is that the whole wallpaper that used to cover up the whole campus building is changed to a new one…providing a new look (image) for the university…

I didn’t see Tun Dr. Mahathir because there are too many people…I would be crushed to pie if I am at the plaza looking at him coming to the university…The funny thing is that there are some people shouting like the fans of Tun as he arrived….I didn’t attend his ceremony too which is expected to be very long and boring, full of speeches…

Tun Dr. Mahathir on the red carpet during his arrival to the university (plaza area)…

n_06mahathir

From left: Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah (Tun Dr. Mahathir’s wife), Tun Dr. Mahathir and Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Datuk Lim Kok Wing, President of Limkokwing University, our lovely president…

Anyway, this is the video I found from YouTube, showing the screening of a video made by my university in the Hall of Fame showing the tribute of Tun Dr. Mahathir to Malaysia…

He is one of the most respectable leaders in the world, in my opinion. Leading Malaysia of over 22 years, he brought a lot of positive changes to Malaysia. Without him, we would never have the world tallest twin buildings (Petronas Twin Towers), Sepang International Circuit (F1), Kuala Lumpur International Airport (among the world best airports), Putrajaya (The Garden City), Cyberjaya (The Intelligent City), National Sports Complex, etc…His contributions to the country are uncountable…aah..dun forget that he is the one who brought Commonwealth Games (world second largest games) to Kuala Lumpur (SUKOM 1998) too.

Message from the author…Earth Hour 2009

===========================================

OFFICIAL MESSAGE ON EARTH HOUR 2009

A very good night I would like to wish to all my blog’s readers and to the other people involved in witnessing a historical and yet astonishing day, not a day, only in an hour. The one hour might be short, but it conveys a great message not only to you but to everyone living in the Earth regardless of colours, races, religions or even way of lives.

Everyone here will surely know what I am talking about. Right here, today, dated 28th of March, year 2009, is not an ordinary day. By 8.30pm at night, all of us will be switching off lights, the unnecessary lights that we have always switched them on everyday. Let us just switch them off for just an hour, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm tonight to show our cooperation in caring for the Earth seriously.

Honestly, the occasion which lasted just for an hour every year is definitely not enough. This occasion is organized just to inform formally to everyone in the world to turn off their lights in an hour to show care for the world and to increase awareness on the issue of global warming. An hour can’t do much, but if everyone in the world did the same in that only hour, the impact is obviously great.

Actions on taking care of the fragile environment and the mother nature need to be done seriously by now. It is a very long term process and it has no finishing dateline. It is continuous and needed to be continuous till future for the benefit for our mankind and our future generations. Let us do something now before it is too late to save the world and before the earth is not suitable anymore for people to live in.

Many researches have been conducted on the Earth itself. The results are not satisfying and the Earth can’t support the damage that has been done by us in previous years. The Earth can’t bear the pollution created by us just for the sake of wealth and economy. This is wrong, absolutely wrong. If we do not cooperate and take actions now, we will be facing something serious like what is being portrayed in the movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’. This is no joke, some disasters like this can happen to us out of nowhere in sudden if we do not care for the environment.

Economy and developments should not be forgotten, and same goes to environmental care too. The environment needs our attention, the nature needs our love. We want our grandchildren to have the opportunities to take a look at beautiful Grand Canyon, to take a look at the beautiful tropical forests, to take a look at the amazing Great Barrier Coral Reef. We do not want more species of animals or plants to extinct, we want to bring them on to the future with us, as we are all the same, living in the same planet, our Earth.

Do not think what the Earth can give to you, tries to think wisely what you can contribute for the Earth who keeps us right here, till today. The amazing civilizations of people, historical legends, born of the first human, all comes from here, the Earth. Here is our place, and there is no reason why we should abandoned the need to take care of the Earth, of the place we are standing right now, the land as well as the ocean, the hill as well as the river. Do not forget about them.

It is a major concern that the global warming is increasing tremendously all around the world. Polar ice melting, extinction of rare species, rising temperatures, all these rates are getting faster in every second. All of us have to do something right now and forever to keep the world a better place for us to live. Do we want our land to be flooded, do we want our ice-cream to be melted so quick, do we want our lovely animals to extinct, do we want this kind of consequences? Do we want to die right by our own hands, I supposed in indirect ways, but anyway, it is still caused by our selfish actions towards the environment.

The one hour for tonight is totally insufficient. In that one hour, there is not much great effect that can be seen in appreciating the Earth. However, just a simple work to do by every people on this Earth everyday is sufficient enough to keep the Earth as beautiful as possible. Recycling, reusing and saving materials are good habits to be practiced on by everyone, as these habits are very simple to be done. A small action can lead to a great effect, remembers that. Be responsible, one of the main responsibilities of human is to take care of the environment.

Many of the people will gather outdoor in enjoying the global event. This is not a common event, not a common sighting, and not a common turning off lights event. It is not merely a turning off lights event. It is a global event with more than two thousand cities all around the world participating in Earth Hour 2009 to support the main message of the event; which is to appreciate and take care of our Earth.

The Earth is not mine, it is not only yours, it is everybody. Everyone including me, myself have to do my part to save the world from further destruction by our own hands. Let us say stop to further damage to the mother nature. Let us say no to any harmful activities related to the environment. This is not worth it, totally a great sin for damaging the environment, honestly to be said here.

From 8.30pm to 9.30pm today, all unnecessary lights will be turned off mainly in the city region except for the safety and traffic lights for safety purpose. However, it will be very dark during the one hour too. Hence, everybody have to pay attention to your belongings, to your safety and to your family, friends or even to the unknowns. We are here, all united, together to support the day, to support the Earth. What more can we care rather than the Earth?!

Later at night, cities around the world will turn off its lights from buildings to buildings, from areas to areas. The event will be recorded and broadcasted all around the world to show that the world is very keen in supporting the event which is first organized by Sydney, Australia in year 2007. Everybody have to be just excited and stay tuned and never let your eyes out of these cities.Normal residents can give their support by switching off their lights in houses too, but remember, thinks of your safety too.

Turning off lights for an hour around the world will help to save a lot of energy and reduce a lot of carbon emission which is harmful to the environment. Imagine if we did this for every hour, which is quite impossible. Tonight, after all lights are out, like a serious blackout, people can have some time to light up their candles around here and enjoy the romantic scene with us under the brightly sky with stars and moon, unless if rains occur.

People have seen this event lightly, they ignored it, they forget about it, and some do not even know about it. This is totally disappointing. This is not a small event, this is an international event, just as important as Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup or any others. Can’t we put some time to commemorate the event, for only an hour? Time is precious, but the Earth is far more precious than the time. We have ample of time for other things, but we have only one livable and comfortable planet, only the Earth.

Everybody have to be united, together, for the event and for the continuous effort in caring for the environment. A great thanks I would like to wish to some organizers who made a lot of efforts in promoting this global event, taking care of the environment and organizing the great event for all to take part, for all to contribute, for the benefits of all. Thanks again, especially to the WWF.

This is a great idea of switching off lights, a very creative idea, in showing our love to the Earth. Everybody have to continue their support for the event , not only for this year, but for the upcoming years too. This event will be getting bigger, gaining more support from cities around the world. The target of 1000 cities participating had been achieved with tremendous result, thanks to the advertisement by everyone who are involved.

Participating in this global event, my home city, Kuala Lumpur is very fortunate to show the love to the Earth through this global event. Never to be forgotten, today will be one of the most memorable day for all, including me, myself as well. There are many other ways in showing your love and care towards the environment, do it and making it as a good habits for the better of the future.

Having no words to say anymore since I have given a long message now that made all of the people here bored, I would like to conclude my words now. However, before I would like to end my message, remember, we live in the Earth, we are breathing in air from the Earth, we are using resources from the Earth, why can’t we just sit down and think wisely on how to protect the Earth and do something about it. Be a responsible person, in saving the world, the nature, the environment and the Earth!

To check on the official website, go to www.earthhour.org

Anyway, for now, what you have to do first, as the first step, is to switch off your lights no matter where you are on 28th March 2009 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm!

Support Earth Hour 2009!

Sincerely,

Vincent Loy
