Full result of TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2016

The TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2016 was held successfully last evening in Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. This annual awards presentation that honours the best of Hong Kong’s TVB series and programmes every year gives opportunity for Malaysians to vote for their most favourite choices. Public votes accounts for 70% while professional judges took the remaining 30% in deciding the winners for the evening. Over 20 Hong Kong celebrities (actors and actresses) attended the event. However, none of them are big names to my disappointment. Well, that is expected since those big names from TVB have either left the station or retired from acting.

The celebrities attending the show were Ruco Chan, Nancy Wu, Kristal Tin, Benjamin Yuen, Sisley Choi, Moon Lau, Philip Ng, Mat Yeung, Cheung Wing Hong, Bob Cheung, Grace Wong, Grace Chan, Mandy Wong, Vincent Wong, Tracy Chu, Eliza Sam, Natalie Tong, Ali Lee, Joyce Tang and Koni Lui. The hosts for the ceremony were Carol Cheng, C-Kwan, Luk Wing, Ashley Chu and Jarvis Chow. The first three in that host line-up also hosted TVB Starhub Awards in Singapore last month and they are expected to host for TVB Anniversary Awards back in Hong Kong next month. Invited award presenters from Hong Kong were Ha Yu and Kara Hui to present the most favourite leading actor and actress awards. The trophy design is a slight improvement from the previous years’ one but still looks bad and a bit too big. The ceremony started at 8.30pm and ended on 11.00pm on 26th November 2016. Here below is the full result of the awards presentation alongside with my brief opinions:

My Favourite TVB Drama Series
“A Fist Within Four Walls”

Opinion: Expected. This drama is considered the best of the year so far with its thrilling actions, fantastic acting and suspenseful plot. It has also sweep some other awards of the evening, making it the biggest winner.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Leading Role
Ruco Chan (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)

Opinion: Expected outcome too. Ruco delivered an amazing performance in that drama and most important, his character is very likable. However, he has huge competition from Roger Kwok in next month’s TVB Anniversary Awards as Roger delivered another award-worthy performance in the currently airing drama ‘Dead Wrong’ that isn’t competing in this Malaysia’s awards but in Hong Kong one next month. So, I think Ruco will end up getting My Favourite TV Male Character two times in a row for the Hong Kong one. Still a great accomplishment for this brilliant actor.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role
Nancy Wu (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)

Opinion: There isn’t any strong competition for leading actress category this year. So, Nancy is the only stood out one with a great performance in ‘A Fist Within Four Walls’. It has been a busy year as she appeared in four TVB dramas in this year alone. I think she is going to take home next month’s Best Actress again too. Well, she deserved it in the time when there is no more better actresses around. Both she and Ruco won favourite leading actor and actress awards last year and there they win them again this year. I have no objection for that.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Supporting Role
Mat Yeung (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)

Opinion: Mat Yeung has appeared in a lot of TVB series for many years. Finally, he gets some recognition with some good roles especially in this year. He usually portrayed very minor characters and finally he gained spotlight this year. He is a good actor but I think there is still a lot of space in between before he can step further to take on leading role.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role
Joyce Tang (“House of Spirits”)

Opinion: I’m very happy for Joyce Tang. I hardly see her anymore after her success in ‘Armed Reactions’ drama franchise many years ago. This year she has a great role in ‘House of Spirits’ and I’m rooting for her to win this from the very beginning. And yes, she won it. Her hard work paid off.

My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actor
Cheung Wing Hong (“The Last Healer in Forbidden City, “House of Spirits”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”)

Opinion: I’m also glad that Cheung Wing Hong won this. He is the only nominee in this category that stood out among the rest and delivered some great performances not only in this year but also from the past few years too. I started to notice on his talent few years back when he is still a new actor.

My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actress
Moon Lau (“Angel In-the-Making”, “Over Run Over”, “Blue Veins”, “House of Spirits”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”)

Opinion: Moon Lau is also a deserving winner. It’s a busy year for her too and yet she still present to us very natural and likable acting in all series she was involved in eventhough she is just a new actress with little experience.

My Favourite TVB On Screen Couple
Ruco Chan & Nancy Wu (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Vincent Wong & Tracy Chu (“Over Run Over”)

Opinion: Two winners again. This is something that I don’t like. The organizer should just stick to one winner. Ruco and Nancy is the more deserving pair. Handing out the award to Vincent and Tracy is like a consolation for them as they will be going home empty handed if they didn’t award this to them. Chemistry between Ruco and Nancy needs no further explanation. They, the currently highly rumored couple look great together.

My Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song
從未知道你最好 (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) – Ruco Chan & Nancy Wu

Opinion: Expected. This song is nice to listen to and it immediately reminds me of that series.

My Favourite Top 16 TVB Drama Characters
Ruco Chan (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Benjamin Yuen (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Philip Ng (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Sisley Choi (“Presumed Accidents”)
Eliza Sam (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Wayne Lai (“Short End of the Stick”)
Mandy Wong (“Law dis-Order”)
Ali Lee (“Law dis-Order”)
Natalie Tong (“Speed of Life”)
Nancy Wu (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Grace Wong (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Grace Chan (“Blue Veins”)
Bobby Au Yeung (“House of Spirits”)
Joyce Tang (“House of Spirits”)
Koni Lui (“House of Spirits”)
Kristal Tin (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)

Opinion: They should cut this down to 10 winners and not the other way round now, which is expanding it further to 16 winners so that almost everyone can get one. People not deserving to win in this category are Philip Ng, Grace Chan and Kristal Tin. There are some much more better actors or actresses to take this award.

My Favourite TVB Variety Programme
“Sunday Stage Fight”

Opinion: Yup, a very entertaining and hilarious show. I remembered I laughed a lot watching this programme once every week last time.

My Favourite TVB Enrichment Programme
“Wellness on the Go 4 – Going Green and Sustainable Living”

Opinion: No opinion on this one because I didn’t watch it but I actually prefer ‘Do Did Eat’. ‘Do Did Eat’ is an interesting programme and I thought earlier it should win it since Carol Cheng is present in the ceremony alongside with C-Kwan and Luk Wing that hosted that particular programme.

My Favourite TVB Host in Variety Programme
Mat Yeung & Benjamin Yuen (“All Work No Pay Holidays – India”)

Opinion: I think people voted for them because they are handsome. That’s it. That is not the true way of judging the quality of hosting actually. Carol, Luk Wing and C-Kwan are a bit more deserving to take this award. Now, they end up went home empty handed to my surprise. They came to Malaysia just for the ceremony hosting job. They did very well in their ‘Do Did Eat’ programme actually but didn’t win this.

Online Most Beloved Artiste Award 2016
Grace Wong

Opinion: A new award this year. Well, her popularity suddenly soared due to her very interesting role in ‘A Fist Within Four Walls’ that makes her way more noticeable than ever. She is also very pretty and cool. So, there isn’t much doubt on her winning this.

Video highlight of the awards presentation below:

Now, there is one more awards to go, and that is the last and the most prestigious TVB Anniversary Awards in Hong Kong to be held on 18th December 2016. I’m surprised that TVB hasn’t release the nomination list yet. They are so late this year.

Shanghai Tower named CTBUH’s Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2016 and won Emporis Skyscraper Award 2015

Shanghai Tower is a 632 metres tall skyscraper located in Shanghai, China and is currently the second tallest building in the world. Completed in 2015, it is also the tallest building in China, a country that has been actively building supertalls in recent decades. Designed by Gensler Architects, Shanghai Tower has 128 floors and is one of the three supertall buildings in the prime area in Pudong. The other two are the Shanghai World Financial Center (492 metres high) and Jin Mao Tower (421 metres high).

Recently, the tower is named Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2016 by Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Besides that, the tower has also won the Emporis Skyscraper Award 2015. It’s a double joy for the tower. Shanghai Tower has accomplished such level of recognition due to many reasons. Some of them are its elegant spiraling cylindrical form, energy-efficient performance of the building, extraordinary double-skin facade, world’s fastest elevator, etc.

Shanghai Tower prevailed over other winners in smaller categories in CTBUH Best Tall Buildings selection to take the top prize after winning the Best Tall Building Asia and Australasia. Best Tall Building Americas goes to VIA 57 West, Best Tall Building Europe goes to The White Walls and Best Tall Building Middle East and Africa goes to The Cube. As for the Emporis Skyscraper Award, Shanghai Tower topped the list of their 10 finalist selection. The other 9 in order from top to bottom are Evolution Tower in Russia (no.2), II Dritto in Italy (no.3), Jiangxi Nanchang Greenland Central Plaza in China (no.4), ABODE 318 in Australia (no.5), Icon Bay in United States of America (no.6), D1 Tower in United Arab Emirates (no.7), 432 Park Avenue in United States of America (no.8), Citygate in Austria (no.9) and ICE II in Canada (no.10).

I would love to visit Shanghai Tower and goes up to its observation deck to enjoy the panoramic view of the city and to purchase a replica model of the skyscraper. If you know me well, one of my hobbies is to collect replica models of famous buildings and towers around the world. This hobby is actually very costly, but what can I do since it’s my interest. I have not visited Shanghai before and I am looking forward for a trip to that city in near future. I think I would be very impressed not only by the supertalls in that city, but also by the overall magnificent skyline of the city.

Back in Malaysia for my year-end semester break

Finally, I touched down in Malaysia this morning after spending an exact 9 months in Perth, Australia for the first half of my master course in architecture. A gloomy weather greeted me this morning as there was a downpour, and another heavier one happening right now. And in between them, the heat from the scorching sun is nearly killing me. Now, I have to readjust myself back to the tropical weather from the lovely four-seasons pattern in Perth.

I managed to clean up my room (a bit, not everything) and clear up my luggage before I had my lunch and a quick afternoon nap just now to recover from the tiredness from not being able to sleep last night in the plane. If you knew me, I’m the person who find it very uncomfortable to be seated and confined in a place for few hours straight. Hence, sitting in a plane for a long journey equals to suffer for me. Luckily, flight from Perth back to Kuala Lumpur (and otherwise) only took 5 hours and 30 minutes. That is not long but still considered unbearable for me.

On the other hand, I managed to catch the final episode just now for the TVB drama I’m currently watching which is called ‘My Lover from the Planet Meow’. The ending was aired last night but I was in airport waiting for flight back home. I’m happy the series has finally concluded because it is a very bad drama and I hope it is over as soon as possible. Following the success of a TVB drama called ‘Ghost of Relativity’ last year, the sane cast is brought together for another drama with similar supernatural comedy theme. However, this time, for this new series, it failed in all aspects. It is boring, awkward, weird and lacks intensity and fun. This is like a drama being forced to be created without any real effort just to borrow the success of its unrelated predecessor last year.

Moses Chan is again back to his wooden acting in his recent works which I find it very bad for his career at this point of his time. He is like not having any good roles anymore since winning TVB Best Actor back in 2007 from his excellent performance in ‘Heart of Greed’. Kristal Tin acted cute and exaggerated and that is annoying considering she is no longer suitable for such role due to her current age. Nancy Wu has a far lesser important role this time and all she does is just average here but that’s not her problem. It’s her character’s problem. This series is really boring, dull and I consider it being the worst drama of the year that I have seen so far. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘My Lover from the Planet Meow’ a total of 5.5.

Today is the first day I came back to Malaysia, and it’s also coincidentally the day Bersih holds its gathering in the city centre to voice out their dissatisfaction over the present government. They are the Yellow-team (the participants wearing yellow shirts to show support for it) and then there comes the Red team that opposes it and supports the government blindly. Now, there is even another group called Orange Team. What is this now? A school sports day with different coloured teams? The political drama in Malaysia is funny. As long as the present government is still here, Malaysia will never see a bright future. I’m not there physically, but my heart goes out for Bersih. I’m not meaning that I’m supporting the opposition parties in the politics but that I really want for a better prime minister, a better government, a better system for my country. Hence, change is needed!

It’s my last week here in Perth before heading back to Malaysia for my year-end semester break.

Yay…I’m super excited right now, not because there is a supermoon sighting yesterday but because I will be heading home by this Saturday. Time flies. I have spent 9 months here in Perth for my first two semesters of my study. Yes, exactly 9 months. I remembered I first arrived here in Perth on 19th February, and then I will be leaving on this Saturday, 19th November. That’s coincidence. Suddenly, the homesick feeling strikes back as I do miss my home, my room’s bed, my family, and all the Malaysian food that I love. It’s okay. There’s only few more days left.

I have a great time here in Perth apart from my study. I got to explore around the city during some free time and Perth is really a beautiful place to visit. However, it’s a bit small and would be boring if you stay here for long. In future, if there is a chance, I would also like to explore places a bit further away from the city to check out some amazing nature Western Australia offers. Hopefully I can do with my friends before our completion of study end of next year. I think I will also hang around in the city some day this week before I’m heading home, just to catch the last glimpse of the city for the year. I will return by nearing end of February next year for my last half of my study.

There is now only one more assignment to submit before the end of my current second semester. That’s the portfolio for my design studio that has to be submitted on this coming Friday. I have no worry now as I have completed the task which is now pending only in printing and handing in at the campus. After that, I have to settle quite a number of stuff before going to the airport on this Friday’s evening for flight back home. It’s going to be a busy day this Friday. But right now, I can be free finally…

Some days have passed after the US Presidential Election of which Donald Trump is now the president-elect and will take the office next year, people are still voicing out their dissatisfaction or displeasure over the result. Well, that has becomes a fact that cannot be changed. There’s no point talking about it anymore as your country had already voted. Move on. I don’t think he will be really bad taking on the presidency. Let see how he performs. On the other hand, that election has caused the global market to go down and one of the most affected is Malaysian currency as expected. Our ringgit is very weak and now it makes our money much more less value. Haiz…You see below the USD rate to RM now! It gives me heart attack, man…

Moving on…yesterday, Disney released a new official trailer for their upcoming live-adaptation of their classic animated film ‘Beauty and the Beast’. The trailer is now receiving soaring views and very critical feedback. I watched it and I got chill. It looks very beautiful and good. I hope the movie itself will be that good as well. I have to wait another 4 months for it. Damn…I’m impressed by the story that sticks to the original, the very cool graphic done to the characters and setting, the modern rendition of the classic musical score to this movie that makes this live-adaptation film feels much more grand and epic, and of course the beautiful Emma Watson as the Belle. It seriously gives back the nostalgic feeling and reminds me when I was a kid watching that classic Disney animated movie.

Jackie Chan is honoured with an Academy Award recently in 2016 Governors Awards. He is given an Oscar for lifetime achievement and he truly deserved it. He has been involved in over 200 films (some Hollywood movies too) and has been in the film industry for over 55 years. A huge congratulation to him!

Contradicting early predictions, Donald Trump won the US Election 2016 to become the next President

I kept refreshing news website today to check on the updated results of the election for the United States presidency as live updates keep rolling in. Eventhough the election is supposed to be none of my business since I’m not an American, but we have to certainly admit the impact this election may have to the world’s economy and politics from some major political decisions in future.

The two candidates running for the top post are Hillary Clinton of Democratic Party and Donald Trump of Republican Party. The current President, Barack Obama is of course supporting Clinton since they are in the same party. Before the elections, there were many early polls and predictions going on and most of them were expecting Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton, to win this election. Then, as the final days before the election arrive, people are predicting a much tighter race as Trump zooms ahead in popularity.

And then, election came and the result is now made known. Donald Trump won the election and will become the 45th President of the United States of America from January 2017 onward. He had won over 270 seats required while Clinton has nothing to do besides than accepting this shocking defeat. She could not make history by becoming the first female president of the country unfortunately.

I don’t really like both of them as the candidates for this top post. I don’t think both are capable for this job. Electing either one of them is considered a joke for me. Donald Trump, a billionaire businessman who suddenly ventured into politics and made a lot of harsh and racist remarks. Hillary Clinton, a former president’s wife who is physically weak and couldn’t propose something really good for the country. But if you let me to vote, I’ll pick Clinton.

But right now in reality, Donald Trump won. He better think before he act from now on because he now has a real huge responsibility as his actions will not only impact his country but also may affect the whole world. He immediately promised he will go a great job (we will see) after election result confirmed that he will be heading successfully to the White House.

Finally had an awesome stress-free weekend. And a movie review for ‘Doctor Strange’ (2016).

After having done my final submission for my design studio on last Friday, I’m finally having a great stress-free weekend. It’s something that I don’t get to see for the many past weeks. My second semester is going to end soon and now I can start to feel all the burden and pressure going off slowly from my mind and body. Anyway, there are still two submissions before I can officially call it the end of the semester. But for right now, I think I deserve some time to rest and chill and this is the perfect weekend for it. It’s also my second last weekend here in Perth before I fly back to Malaysia for my year end break.

My day was fully occupied yesterday. It started with a shopping in Westfield Carousel mall alone while waiting for my friend to come over and fetch me. It’s nice to shop alone as you have no distraction. But clothing on sale here are pretty expensive and I couldn’t buy a lot. Then, I joined my friends for an over 2-hours badminton session. There are three courts for us and so everyone of us have to be like almost playing non-stop this time. It’s an intense session but fun. Then, I’m back to the mall for lunch and accompanying my friends for shopping this time.

Then, I spent the rest of the day attending the early Christmas gathering in my friend’s house. It’s a potluck dinner and everyone brought a Christmas present to be exchanged. I’m having a great time and after it ended, we were all feeling exhausted after a long busy day. Time passed like faster than usual yesterday.

Just this morning, I head back to Carousel mall again, but this time, is to watch a movie. I watched ‘Doctor Strange’, a Marvel superhero movie that I’m much anticipating due to the critical acclaim the film received right now. The film turned out to be very good from the great acting by the main cast (Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen). Those are the actors and actresses that I like and they are all in this movie. The visual effects are fantastic. I think it’s the film with best visual effects this year so far and I think it stand a chance to win Best Visual Effects in the Oscars. The movie relied a lot on CGIs that most parts of them reminded us on ‘Inception’ movie too. I have to really compliment the effort put on the graphic of this movie that seriously paid off.

The story is fast-paced, some scenes are hilarious, and the characters’ development is there eventhough it’s a bit not enough for Rachel and Mads’ characters. The actions are brilliant as expected based on Marvel standard. Overall, the movie is really good and it revealed the fifth Infinity Stone in the whole Marvel cinematic universe that will leads to the Avengers: Infinity Wars. There are also two scenes after the end of the movie not to be missed. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Doctor Strange’ a total of 8.0. It’s exciting and it’s considered something fresh and out of typical dimension in Marvel’s formula. I’m interested to know how are they going to bring in Doctor Strange to join the Avengers team later on.

Done my final studio presentation for the semester.

When I thought of a design presentation for final submission, I would recall how long it took for the presentation of all my classmates in my previous semester. I had to wait until over 6pm for it to finish and I was there since 9am in the morning. This time, I had the fastest ever presentation. Every students is only given 3 minutes to present and that is enough for everyone to deliver their concept and design proposal with aid of panels and model.

(One of my classmates presenting his work in front of our lecturers and guests)

Last semester, I took the Urban Design for my studio. This semester, I’m taking the Integrated Design for studio and the project brief is basically to design an indoor archery facility for the existing Western Australia Archery Centre in Whiteman Park. This is a real project which means that one of the designs from us will be selected to be constructed. This project has been attempted by another studio in the past semester and is continued for another re-run in this studio. The project is interesting, but it somehow gave a lot of limitations to the possibilities of design due to the many requirements already set. Those are the challenges that we have to tackle.

To be honest, I don’t have much motivation or interest on this design project. I wish to take on something more interesting. I have to admit that I myself didn’t really like my own final design. But since time is running out, and hence I have to stop from my design development process and quickly move on to finish the final drawings. For the past two weeks, I already don’t have much time to sleep. My time is mostly preoccupied by working on this assessment. There were so many things to do as expected for an architecture student. Now, it’s all done for the final submission and there is a huge sign of relief in me right now eventhough I’m not selected to be the finalists for jury presentation this afternoon. Well, I have to admit my design is nothing extraordinary and I do really admire some of the very creative ideas from my classmates for their proposed designs for the indoor archery centre.

Well, things are not over yet officially. I still have a research essay which I have to submit two weeks later. Well, I’m glad that I’m almost done for that but I need to further refine it. I’m also having hard time trying to further compress my essay to be within the required word count limit. I also have the portfolio for this design studio to submit in two weeks later too. After that, I can call my second semester officially over and then I can fly back Malaysia happily. It would be happier if I can get good results for this semester too.

But at least for right now, I can have a proper life back. I can have my minimum 8 hours of sleep every night back. I can have my time spent browsing the web back. I can have my time lazy around again. There’s two more weeks and I’ll return to my home. Can’t wait to get back to Malaysia to eat all my favourite Malaysian food. Time flies. Now is already November and did you notice that I have my blog header for the month showing flying balloons. It’s like a representation of hope and celebration and that relates very well to me right now. And finally, it’s now exactly one more month to my birthday!
