My picks for the best of TVB series in 2023 and a little prediction for upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards 2023.

It’s a wrap for Hong Kong’s TVB series in 2023 after I have finished ‘The Queen of News’ over a week ago. It’s the time again for me to choose the best of the year based on my personal judgement, observation and analysis. This is purely my own preference and is limited to only the television dramas of the year that I have watched.

By the way, I have been doing this since 2007. Hence, this is my 17th year of annually selecting my personal best of TVB series. I have watched a total of 8 dramas this year as listed below (along with my rating to each series out of 10 points).

  • The Invisibles. (7.8)
  • Speakers of Law. (6.3)
  • Secret Door. (8.0)
  • Unchained Medley. (7.0)
  • Narcotic Heroes. (7.1)
  • Let Me Take Your Pulse. (8.0)
  • Romeo and His Butterfly Lover. (6.8)
  • The Queen of News. (8.7)

As expected, ‘The Queen of News’ is my highest rated TVB drama of 2023 while ‘Speakers of Law’ is my lowest rated. You may also look up for my individual review to each of these dramas by using the ‘search’ function in my blog page and key in the relevant drama’s title.

‘The Queen of News’ is the most celebrated drama with 6 honours including best series. It is very likely that this drama will snatch the most wins at the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards 2023 too (to be held in 14th January 2024). I will be going mad if it doesn’t win best drama.

Competition for best lead actor is very weak this year and out of intense scrutiny, Kenneth Ma prevailed from his performance in ‘The Queen of News’ (particularly from his emotional scene in the last episode). This is his second time winning this honour. Anyone could take this win at the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards 2023.

I was also very hesitant between Charmaine and Selena for best lead actress. They are both outstanding in ‘The Queen of News’ but finally I picked Selena as I find Charmaine had all the charisma and aura in the series but her character lacks a little depth/character’s development when compared to Selena’s character. This is also Selena’s second time winning this honour. I do hope that she could win best actress for the first time ever at the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards but Charmaine is likely heading for her historic third win. How about a tie, TVB?

Anyway, if you are a fan of TVB series over the years, what are your picks and predictions for this year? Feel free to share your thought.

Benjamin Yuen and Mandy Wong won Most Favourite Lead Actor and Actress for both Singapore and Malaysia region.

TVB held its 50+1 Anniversary Gala yesterday to celebrate the station’s 51st birthday on November 19th, 2018. Besides than the usual performances and massive gathering of TVB artistes, there was this one new segment where the Most Favourite Lead Actor and Actress awards for Singapore and Malaysia were presented.

Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards and TVB Star Awards Malaysia had been cancelled this year. However, Malaysian and Singaporean audiences can still vote for their favourite lead actor and actress of the year and the result were revealed on the Anniversary Gala. The reason I’m excited to watch the gala live yesterday is not because of the games, dances, gigs, songs or lucky draws but because of this revelation of winners.

I am already expecting Mandy Wong from her performance in Threesome (I didn’t watch this series though but heard a lot of praises for her) to win although I prefer Ali not to go home empty handed (Ali Lee did well in Who Wants A Baby too). It is also disappointing of not seeing Selena Lee being placed in top 3 at least (her role in Succession War is brilliant and very likable). It would be nice if Mandy and Ali each won one for Most Favourite Lead Actress. In the end, Mandy Wong swept both the Singapore and Malaysia awards. The same goes for Most Favourite Lead Actor of which Benjamin Yuen took both too. This is the one that got me very upset. Benjamin is definitely not on par yet to win and he even swept two now. This is absurd. This result is an obvious outcome from below average male performances in TVB dramas this year. If Kenneth Ma’s ‘The Exorcist Meter’ get to air this year and not last year, he would have won all the Most Favourite Lead Actor’ and even ‘Best Actor’ awards easily this time around. This shows that timing and luck are very important.

So it looks like Mandy Wong is now the definite frontrunner for Best Actress on next month’s TVB Anniversary Awards while I still see Alice Chan as a strong dark horse this year. Ali Lee may sneak in for the win too but her chance seems to be dropping. Rounding up Top 5 will be Nancy Wu and Grace Wong. Benjamin Yuen is now the frontrunner for Best Actor (I sincerely hope he doesn’t win, he is certainly not best actor material yet) while the other four to be in top 5 would be Vincent Wong (last year’s TV king), Joe Ma, Carlos Chan and Ruco Chan. Anyone but Benjamin for the win. Benjamin had won much more than he deserved by now already.

It’s Germany VS Argentina in FIFA World Cup 2014’s Final!

Congratulations to both Germany and Argentina for winning their respective semi-final match. Both are now only one step away from the trophy, of which only one team could enjoy the fame of being crowned the champion in the end. Yes! The most anticipated football match, the FINAL of FIFA World Cup 2014 between Germany and Argentina will finally take place this Sunday (Monday’s early morning in Malaysia) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I promised myself to watch that match (I skipped all the earlier matches).

10459091_907699349247395_2709590581632808472_o

It’s quite a long journey to be able to reach to the final stage; from collecting points in preliminary rounds in respective group, to last 16 matches, then to Quarterfinal, and last but not least winning the Semifinal. There are 64 matches in total, of which by now, there are only two more remaining; of course the FINAL and also the third-placing match (Brazil vs. Netherlands). Well, the latter isn’t the focus as the furthest the winning team of the match can get is only to be named the second runner-up of the tournament. Final is the one that the whole world will be excited for.

On Tuesday’s night, the result of the first semi-final match between Germany and Brazil is the most shocking of the whole tournament. 7-1! Germany with a whopping seven goals while the host nation, Brazil had only one. The match has been described as the most humiliating and embarrassing play by the Brazil team sadly. I knew many were supporting Brazil, and even before the match took place, everyone is predicting 50-50 outcome. The two are strong countries in football and neck-to-neck result is expected. I didn’t watch that match, but waken up that day to hear that result is really surprising.

My favourite pick is Germany but I never thought that Brazil would be defeated to such scale. It’s already semifinal! Perhaps, there are three reasons why they ended up losing so badly on that match;

(1) absence of Neymar, a successful skillful player whom is admitted to hospital due to injury in earlier matches.

(2) mounting pressure as their country is the host of this tournament. The stadium is packed full of their supporters, and that could lead to extreme stress for the players wanting so much to get things right not to disappoint them.

(3) few earlier scored goals by the German team had easily dashed the hope of the Brazilian players and broken their mood and spirit to go on.

(4) poor defense and tactics from the Brazilian team, while German has their luck that day.

Well, the match is over, and Brazilian team has to move on too. Let’s hope that they won’t contribute that kind of lousy performance again in the third-placing match, and most importantly in future matches too. Football means so much to their country.

This 7-1 result has been the chat topic the whole day yesterday. That particular match has created such a worldwide buzz that it is also been recognized by Twitter as the most tweeted match in the history of the site. This is not the case for the other semi-final match between Argentina and Netherlands of which the result is not that surprising. Both score no goals, and in the end, Argentina prevails with 4-2 in penalty kicks. Nothing much to comment on this match.

So, time for my last prediction. For third-placing match between Brazil and Netherlands, my pick is Netherlands. They have done fairly well, and looking from Brazil’s extremely devastating performance in the semi-final, Netherlands has the advantage unless Brazil returned to their top form (but it’s a bit too late). And….for the FINAL, I guess 60% winning chance for Germany and 40% for Argentina. I’m still choosing Germany. A solid team. Both of them appeared in Final back in 1986 once (Argentina won) and also in 1990 (Germany won). This is their third encounter in FIFA World Cup Final. Who will win? Germany? Argentina? Hmm…Three more days to the FINAL! Ole…ole…ole…ole..ole! Ole!!! Ole!!!

Entertaining weekend, thanks to the countless comedy talk shows I watched from YouTube.

It was very unusual. It was superbly heavy thunderstorm just now at around 5 in the afternoon. I’m already expecting the worst from the traffic on roads. It must be congestion everywhere and also flood (forever a problem here in KL despite we already having a SMART Tunnel). But I was very surprised to see that there isn’t any long traffic crawl, and cars on roads were even lesser than typical days on this peak hour. Perhaps, many decided to avoid the traffic by staying back late in the office, while I make a risky decision to leave early, and there goes my lucky day; I reached home early.

Back to the topic. Yup…my past weekend had been quite entertaining despite I’m not going out anywhere. Who says you can’t have fun at home? And my dad went into my room as he is curious on why am I laughing so hard in the middle of the night. Sorry for making a bit of noise. I couldn’t control it, as I was watching some seriously funny stand-up comedy talk shows, each by different talented individuals from various countries. Really great jokes and I had a great time. And I didn’t even know that it’s already midnight (have spent few hours watching without realizing the time).

2933940_orig

The first comedian I wish to mention is Kumar. He is a Singaporean, an Indian. Not only he is famous for delivering comedy talk shows touching on sensitive issues like sex, politics and races, he is also popular for his cross-dressing and ‘drag queen’ image. He dares to take the risk to talk on these sensitive topics and I respect his openness which even helps to boost his career further. Since his topics are on Singapore (of which many are similarly happening here in Malaysia and sometimes he even compared the two countries), his content are mostly getting close to us too. He can just make fun of anything without the worry of hurting anyone.

Next on the list of stand-up comedians I wish to highlight is Ellen DeGeneres. She had been the host to her own comedy programme in US, and also she had just recently hosted the Academy Awards to a huge success. What I like about her is her ability to just make a simple sentence funny. Whenever she interviews a famous celebrity, she could intervene with her hilarious remarks easily and all that put off to a great laugh without any single failure I have ever observed. I also like some of her programme’s segments like sharing out awkward auto-correct errors on smartphones nowadays, hilarious photos or signboards, and sometimes her own games.

Next is Dayo Wong. Well, he is now considered a veteran TVB actor (can’t believe he is over 50 years old) and had just won Best Actor on TVB Anniversary Awards last year. Not only that he is talented in acting on dramas, he is also professional on presenting comedy talk shows (had organized many shows in Hong Kong and if I’m not mistaken, in Malaysia too). Well, he speaks Cantonese, and I speak Cantonese too. Hence, very much familiarity to what he wanted to say eventhough some issues are only targeting Hong Kong people themselves.

Well, Malaysia has own comedians too, like Douglas Lim and Harith Iskandar. I first heard of Douglas Lim when he made a spoof of the popular Cantonese song by Beyond and turned it into her expression of frustration towards K-Pop, hence renaming his own rendition of the song to ‘I Hate K-Pop’. Well, I myself hate K-Pop too and prefer the classic Cantopop like him. Honestly, I had a great laugh listening closely to his lyrics. Very well said, and I can laugh even having listened to the same thing over and over again. How crazy it is. While for Harith, I remembered I laughed until I almost cried many months ago on a part when he talked on having CSI Malaysia and what would happens then. Really hilarious. Couldn’t find the video anymore when I searched for it yesterday.

COMEDIANS

What a better way to get rid of Monday blues (Monday pressure) by watching these stand-up comedy talk shows again tonight?! Bye…

TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2013 result.

The TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2013 was held successfully last night at Kenanga Wholesale City. A successor to the former My AOD Favourites Awards, TVB Star Awards Malaysia is organized to honour the best or most popular of TVB series of the respective year. The result is decided fully by online voting and that only Malaysians were eligible to vote. I did vote once on all the categories after just a few simple steps of registering on its official website few weeks ago. Changing the awards name this time may means that Hong Kong’s TVB started to even gaining control of the awards here in Malaysia.

2013-TVB-Star-Awards-Malaysia

I was not able to watch the live broadcast of the awards presentation last night as I had to attend my neighbour’s wedding dinner at the same time. I heard the show lasted slightly over two hours and was attended by huge number of TVB artists including Kenneth Ma, Tavia Yeung, Myolie Wu, Ron Ng, Julian Cheung, Him Law, Eliza Sam, Benjamin Yuen, Ruco Chan, Linda Chung, Krystal Tin, Edwin Siu, Nancy Wu, Mandy Wong, Eric Tsang, etc. Here below is the full of list of winners of the ceremony (full nomination list in my previous post: https://vincentloy.wordpress.com/2013/11/02/tvb-star-awards-malaysia-2013-nomination-list/) The list of result below is accompanied with a bit of my comments:

My Favourite TVB Drama Series : TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II

Comment: Expected. Eventhough ‘Triumph in the Skies II’ isn’t that great, but its immense popularity will let it win this easily. As for measuring in quality, ‘Brother’s Keeper’ is better.

000002546276_1373259124

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Leading Role: CHILAM CHEUNG (TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II)

Comment: Also expected. His charming portrayal as Captain Cool won the hearts of many young girls, hence countless of votes. By looking at this result, I am reminded again that this is not best actor award, just my favourite leading actor award. Ruco Chan in ‘Brother’s Keeper’ is better.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role: LINDA CHUNG (BROTHER’S KEEPER)

Comment: Similar thought with above. Linda Chung’s character in Brother Keeper’s isn’t outstanding or worthy of best actress material. However, since most people think it should be time for her, then I had no comment. I prefer Krystal Tin to win this.

27452_500

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Supporting Role: HIM LAW (TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II)

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role: NANCY WU (TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II)

Comment: Boring to see two of them winning supporting roles again. I’m sure there are other also deserving nominees like Pierre Ngo or Elena Kong. Similarly, this is purely on who’s more popular, hence no problem to Him and Nancy.

My Favourite TVB Most Promising Actor : BENJAMIN YUEN

My Favourite TVB Promising Actress: ELIZA SAM

Comment: One of the few result of the night that I’m satisfied with. Benjamin and Eliza were seen improving in their performances, particularly for Eliza in ‘The Hippocratic Crush II’.

My Favourite TVB On-Screen Couple: KENNETH MA, TAVIA YEUNG (THE HIPPOCRATIC CRUSH II)

Comment: It couldn’t be denied that Kenneth and Tavia really makes up for a real sweet couple on-screen. They win this award last year too. Him Law, step aside please.

Tavia-Yeung-Kenneth-Ma-2

My Favourite Top 15 TVB Drama Characters
Cheung Yat Kin (Kenneth Ma) – The Hippocratic Crush II
Fan Tze Yu (Tavia Yeung) – The Hippocratic Crush II
Hung Mei Suet (Mandy Wong) – The Hippocratic Crush II
Kiu Tin San (Ruco Chan) – Brother’s Keeper
Law Wai Shun (Edwin Siu) – Brother’s Keeper
Cheuk Jing (Linda Chung) – Brother’s Keeper
Yiu Man Ying (Kristal Tin) – Brother’s Keeper
Yiu Yat San/Yiu Yuet San (Bosco Wong) – A Change of Heart
Choi Sum (Wong Cho Lam) – Inbound Troubles
Sam Tong Yik Sum (Francis Ng) – Triumph in the Skies II
Issac Tong Yik Fung (Ron Ng) – Triumph in the Skies II
Coco Ling Cheuk Chi (Nancy Wu) – Triumph in the Skies II
Jayden Koo Ha Yeung (Chilam Cheung) – Triumph in the Skies II
Holiday Ho Lin Hei (Fala Chen) – Triumph in the Skies II
Summer Ha San (Myolie Wu) – Triumph in the Skies II

My Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song: JOEY YUNG – “SEQUEL” (THE HIPPOCRATIC CRUSH II)

Comment: Expected. The ‘Sequel’ song by Joey Yung stood out above the rest. Too bad, she isn’t there to sing this song live. But if compared with the first series’ theme song (also by Joey), the first one is nicer.

My Favourite TVB Documentary: PILGRIMAGE OF HOPE

My Favourite TVB Variety Show: SUPER TRIO MAXIMUS

My Favourite TVB Variety Show Host: ERIC TSANG, CHIN KA LOK, JERRY LAMB, ETC. – SUPER TRIO MAXIMUS

Comment: No doubt ‘Super Trio Maximus’ winning these two awards. The show will never stop from bringing us fun and laughter. Very entertaining game show accompanied with superb huge line-up of hosts.

What’s next? The much anticipated TVB 46th Anniversary Awards 2013, to be held on 16 December.

TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2013 Nomination List

Malaysia had actually started to organize awards presentation to honour the best of TVB series aired every year for a quite a long history. First, we had the annual Astro Wah Lai Toi Drama Awards beginning early 2000s, of which the series in contest are roughly a year later than the original broadcast run in Hong Kong. Then, it was replaced with My AOD Favourites Awards in late 2000s not long after Astro on Demand channel is introduced to Malaysians that offers latest TVB series. And for this year’s awards, Astro on Demand is surprisingly not involved as it is the TVB Entertainment News Channel that organize the 2013 awards. And the name changed AGAIN; it’s now called as TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2013.

As usual, this awards is based on all-voting system and only Malaysians are eligible to do so. Show your support to your favourite TVB artists and series which had done well this year by voting them. Go to this official website: http://tvbstarawards.com.my/2013/. Register first, and then you can start voting easily. The voting began from 1st till 22nd November and you can vote once to all awards’ categories every day. You may even win some prizes, including tickets to the awards show which will be held on 1st December 2013 (Sunday), at Kenanga Wholesale City, Kuala Lumpur. This year, there are 13 categories, and here it is for the nomination list, accompanied with my brief analysis;

My Favourite TVB Drama Series
“Inbound Troubles”
“Season of Love”
“A Great Way to Care II”
“Slow Boat Home”
“A Change of Heart”
“Awfully Lawful”
“Triumph in the Skies II”
“Always and Ever”
“Sniper Standoff”
“Brother’s Keeper”
“Will Power”
“The Hippocratic Crush II”

My pick: The Hippocratic Crush II.

Will win: Triumph in the Skies II.

Comment: It will be a little disadvantage to The Hippocratic Crush II as it has not finish airing yet when the voting ends. However, I do look forward to this sequel after watching its very promising trailers. Triumph in the Skies II, another sequel series, is highly popular this year, and eventhough it’s not that awesome, but I think it will win as it appeals to younger demographics, the group that will vote and eventually determine the winners.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Leading Role
Roger Kwok (“Inbound Troubles”)
Wong Cho Lam (“Inbound Troubles”)
Bosco Wong (“A Change of Heart”)
Francis Ng (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Julian Cheung (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Ron Ng (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Ruco Chan (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Edwin Siu (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Moses Chan (“Will Power”)
Wayne Lai (“Will Power”)
Kenneth Ma (“The Hippocratic Crush II”)
Lawrence Ng (“The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Kenneth Ma / Ruco Chan

Will win: Julian Cheung

Comment: I don’t mind Kenneth Ma winning Malaysia’s TV King for the second time in a row if his character is still very likeable in The Hippocratic Crush II. Of course, his character in the sequel will no longer be that fresh, and hence lower chance this time. Julian Cheung is very popular choice now due to his Captain Koo’s character in the Triumph in the Skies II, but I still find his character not that good or exciting after all. People, please judge performance properly.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role
Sharon Chan (“Friendly Fire”)
Nancy Wu (“Season of Love”)
Louise Lee (“Reality Check”)
Niki Chow (“A Change of Heart”)
Joey Meng (“A Change of Heart”)
Fala Chen (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Myolie Wu (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Esther Kwan (“Always and Ever”)
Kate Tsui (“Sniper Standoff”)
Linda Chung (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Kristal Tin (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Tavia Yeung (“The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Linda Chung / Krystal Tin

Will win: Linda Chung

Comment: Eventhough there is nothing that outstanding from Linda’s character in Brother’s Keeper, but it is no doubt her acting has becomes very solid and convincing nowadays. She had worked hard for so many years, and I think it’s time for her. Her another co-star in the series, Krystal Tin had a very interesting and engaging character and she may be a serious contender this year.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Supporting Role
Edwin Siu (“A Great Way to Care II”)
Vincent Wong (“A Change of Heart”)
Pal Sinn (“Awfully Lawful”)
Him Law (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Patrick Dunn (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Pierre Ngo (“Always and Ever”)
Ben Wong (“Always and Ever”)
Louis Yuen (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Jason Chan (“Will Power”)
Benjamin Yuen (“The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Pierre Ngo

Will win: –

Comment: None of them had a breakthrough character. Nothing much to comment on. If I’m to choose, I pick Pierre Ngo. I didn’t watch Always and Ever, but I think his acting is undeniably good after being highlighted in 2009’s Rosy Business.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role
Samantha Ko (“Friendly Fire”)
Ivana Wong (“Inbound Troubles”)
Angela Tong (“Inbound Troubles”)
Christine Kuo (“A Great Way to Care II”)
Mandy Wong (“A Change of Heart”)
Grace Wong (“Awfully Lawful”)
Nancy Wu (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Elena Kong (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Rebecca Zhu (“Always and Ever”)
Eliza Sam (“Sniper Standoff”)

My pick: Elena Kong

Will win: Nancy Wu / Elena Kong

Comment: I’m very comfortable with Elena Kong. She did very well in Silver Spoons, Sterling Shackles last year but not recognized with any award. Again, she performed excellently on Triumph in the Skies II. Out of all nominees, she deserves it the most.

My Favourite TVB Promising Actor
Jason Chan (“Missing You”, “Will Power”)
William Chak (“Season of Love”, “Triumph in the Skies II”, “Sniper Standoff”)
Sammy Sum (“The Day of Days”, “A Change of Heart”, “Always and Ever”)
Mat Yeung (“The Day of Days”, “Slow Boat Home”, “Karma Rider”)
Benjamin Yuen (“A Change of Heart”, “Always and Ever”, “The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Benjamin Yuen

Will win: Benjamin Yuen / Sammy Sum

Comment: Nothing much to comment. Nothing outstanding from them.

My Favourite TVB Promising Actress
Priscilla Wong (“Reality Check”, “Karma Rider”)
Elaine Yiu (“Slow Boat Home”, “A Change of Heart”)
Grace Wong (“Awfully Lawful”, “The Hippocratic Crush II”)
Rebecca Zhu (“Triumph in the Skies II”, “Always and Ever”)
Eliza Sam (“Triumph in the Skies II”, “Sniper Standoff”, “The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Rebecca Zhu

Will win: Rebecca Zhu, Eliza Sam

Comment: I had to admit that Rebecca did improve. However, I find Eliza had quite a convincing role in The Hippocratic Crush II just by looking at the trailers. She may be a dark horse.

My Favourite TVB On Screen Couple
Roger Kwok & Joey Meng (“Inbound Troubles”)
Louis Cheung & Ivana Wong (“Inbound Troubles”)
Bosco Wong & Niki Chow (“A Change of Heart”)
Francis Ng & Fala Chen (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Julian Cheung & Fala Chen (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Ron Ng & Myolie Wu (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Him Law & Nancy Wu (“Triumph in the Skies II”)
Bobby Au Yeung & Esther Kwan (“Always and Ever”)
Ruco Chan & Linda Chung (“Brother’s Keeper”)
Kenneth Ma & Tavia Yeung (“The Hippocratic Crush II”)

My pick: Kenneth Ma & Tavia Yeung

Will win: Kenneth Ma & Tavia Yeung

Comment: Kenneth and Tavia pairing is the best I have seen in recent years. They may easily continue this kind of on-screen chemistry on The Hippocratic Crush II. A lovely on-screen couple that gets you engaged to the series they are in.
My Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song
圍牆 (“A Great Way to Care II”) – Edwin Siu
明白了 (“Karma Rider”) – Hubert Wu
衝上雲霄 (“Triumph in the Skies II”) – George Lam
意想不到 (“Always and Ever”) – Ngo Ka Nin
續集 (“The Hippocratic Crush II”) – Joey Yung

My pick: The Hippocratic Crush II – Joey Yung

Will win: The Hippocratic Crush II – Joey Yung

Comment: This awards usually favours theme songs that are most recently played. The theme song for The Hippocratic Crush II by Joey Yung had a better appeal and melody, just like the original series last year.

Agree to my opinions? The result will be up on 1st December 2013, and let’s wait whether the result matches mostly to my predictions or not. This awards is always known as the prelude or forecast to the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards.

Starhub TVB Awards 2013 result.

Starhub TVB Awards is an annual awards presentation in Singapore in collaboration between local TV operator, Starhub with TVB, Hong Kong’s largest TV station. This awards is usually presented much earlier before the year ends, hence excluding some series that are scheduled to broadcast in last quarter of the year. These series will then be carried forward to next year’s awards consideration. This is opposed to TVB pattern of usually emphasizing on the end-year series (called anniversary series) for better advantage in the much prestigious TVB Anniversary Awards held annually in December.

I didn’t pay much attention to this Starhub Awards because I’m a Malaysian, and we do have our own awards presentation to TVB dramas which is the annual MY AOD Favourites Awards. But since Starhub TVB Awards is involving Hong Kong series, I’m going to write a post on its result this year too, along with my brief comments. The star-studded awards presentation (a lot of TVB artists attended) with 20 awards presented was held in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 28th September 2013 (last Saturday).

Results of the 4th Starhub TVB Awards (2013): (Source from the awards’ official website: http://starhubtvbawards2013.com/en/tvb-award-winners-2013)

Red Carpet Star – Linda Chung.

Star of Perfect Poise Award – Raymond Lam.

Most Glamorous Female Artist Award – Kate Tsui.

Everlasting Glow Award – Linda Chung.

Classic TVB Character – Michael Miu.

(The five awards presented above are quite unnecessary for me. It feels like these awards are presented just to please more TVB artists. There isn’t any effort needed throughout the past year in dramas for them to win these)

Most Improved TVB Actress – Mandy Wong.

Most Improved TVB Actor – Him Law.

(100% agree for Mandy, and 60% agree for Him. For most improved actor, I prefer Oscar Leung first before Him Law)

Best TVB Female Newcomer – Christine Kuo.

Best TVB Male Newcomer – Jason Chan.

(100% disagree to these two results. Both are heavily promoted by TVB nowadays but that doesn’t mean they are both qualified to be called ‘best’. Sorry, but it’s true. Perhaps, there are no other truly good newcomers with great potentials. That’s why they win)

My Favourite TVB Theme Song – Little Something by Mag Lam (Season of Love).

(Didn’t hear this before. Not much to comment)

My Favourite TVB On-screen Couple – Bosco Wong & Niki Chow (A Change of Heart).

My Favourite TVB Variety Host – Pauline Lan in Lady First – Singapore.

My Favourite TVB Variety Show – Lady First – Singapore.

My Favourite TVB Mega Variety Special – TVB Golden Viva Spectacular (Live).

(Nothing to comment for the four awards above)

Singapore Media’s Favourite TVB Drama – Triumph in the Skies II.

My Favourite TVB Drama – Triumph in the Skies II.

(I am not surprised that Triumph in the Skies II won. Its popularity skyrockets not only in Hong Kong but also in mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia)

My Favourite TVB Female TV Characters – Myolie Wu (Triumph in the Skies II), Linda Chung (Witness Insecurity), Tavia Yeung (Silver Spoons, Sterling Shackles), Kate Tsui (Highs and Lows), Michelle Yim (The Confidant), Niki Chow (A Change of Heart).

(All are very deserving except for Niki Chow. Quite surprised that Michelle made it here which I’m happy for her. It’s very hard for a veteran actress to win awards based on popularity like this one.)

My Favourite TVB Male TV Characters – Raymond Lam (Highs and Lows), Moses Chan (Beauty at War), Bosco Wong (Witness Insecurity), Kenneth Ma (Three Kingdoms RPG), Julian Cheung (Triumph in the Skies II), Ruco Chan (Slow Boat Home).

(Wait. How come Francis Ng is not in the winning list. Singaporeans don’t like him maybe. And wait, last year’s TVB king, Wayne Lai also didn’t make it. Weird.)

My Favourite TVB Actress – Tavia Yeung.

(No objection. Everybody expected her time came to grab TV Queen in a row; first in Malaysia last year, then in Hong Kong last year, and now in Singapore as Starhub TVB Queen)

My Favourite TVB Actor – Bosco Wong.

(Wow. Bosco won Singapore’s Starhub TVB King. Quite unbelievable, but I think it should be the time to honour him with a major award after so many years. After Kenneth or Raymond, it shall be him.)

Sorry if my comments offend you particularly to those who are fans of artists that I find not deserving enough. It’s my sincere individual opinions.

Not long after, it will be MY AOD Favourites Awards 2013 turn which is always regarded as the forecast to actual result of TVB Anniversary Awards every year.

Celebrating Sammi Cheng’s 25 years in Hong Kong entertainment industry.

For those living in Asia, particularly the Chinese, you must have heard the name ‘Sammi Cheng’. In case you don’t know, she is a Hong Kong cantopop singer and actress who has been very successful in film and music industry. She has been always referred to as a diva and has been one of the most prominent female singers in Hong Kong since the 1990s, the golden decade of Cantopop music. When I was a kid (in 90s), she is one of my favourite idols. I love to listen to most of her songs and most of her movies are my favourite too. Even in present time, whenever she is coming to Malaysia to hold a concert, I wouldn’t miss it.

Her fame should not be questionable. It has come to my surprise that even some of my Malay and oversea friends recognized her. in 1990s, Cantopop music peak to fame throughout Asia-Pacific with many notable artists like the Four Heavenly Kings (Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Leon Lai) while the females are represented by Faye Wong, Sammi Cheng, Kelly Chen, etc. Sammi Cheng has also been referred by media as Cantopop Queen till these days, furthering proving her popularity that never fades and cementing her position as one of the leading Hong Kong artists to date. She had also been famous for bringing in unique fashions to her dressings in her concerts.

Let’s look back at little bit of her history in the entertainment industry that spans approximately 25 years. Sammi entered the industry at a very young age of 16 by participating into a high profile new talent singing contest in 1988. Despite winning only third place in the competition, the sponsoring record company saw her potential and offered her a recording contract. From there on, her success began. She won her first major award, winning best new prospect award in 1990. In following years, she had been among the big winners of every annual music awards, having won ‘Best Sales’, ‘Best Cantonese Release’, ‘Best Hong Kong Female Singer’, ‘Most Favourite Asia-Pacific Female Singer’, ‘Gold Song Gold Award’, etc.

She also broke the record as being the youngest female singer to hold more than 50 accumulated concert nights in Hong Kong. To date, she had produced over 80 studio albums, 10 live concert albums, over 110 singles (songs) with over 30 covers and had hold over 130 concert shows. I personally like many of her songs (particularly romantic songs) and will frequently play her popular songs in present days too when current music couldn’t be compared to the previous 1990s Cantonese classics.

Well, she had been very successful in films too. Before involving in films, she had appeared in several TV series back in 1990s when she is still a newcomer. Her first film debut was in 1992, in ‘Best of the Best’ with Jacky Cheung. From there on, she had been actively involved in many films and had been paired with many other heavyweight stars like Ekin Cheng, Anita Mui, Leon Lai, Stephen, Chow, Andy Lau, Richie Ren, Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Eason Chan, Cecilia Cheung, etc. Her most iconic and popular works are most probably ‘Needing You’, ‘Wu Yen’ (won her Best Actress Award in Hong Kong People Choice Award), ‘Love on a Diet’, Marry a Rich Man’, ‘My Left Eye Sees Ghost’, ‘Love For All Seasons’, ‘Yesterday Once More’, ‘Everlasting Regret’ (earns Best Actress nomination in Venice International Film Festival), ‘Romancing in Thin Air’ and most recently ‘Blind Detective’.

Sammi+Cheng+Blind+Detective+Photo+Call+Cannes+nekV5IrY4g3l

Despite not winning any Best Actress Award in annual Hong Kong Film Awards (she held record for being the female with most nominations but without single win in the category), her performance in movies is always complimented for being relaxing and entertaining. I like to see her in movies. On her recent performance in ‘Blind Detective’, she did another amazing job. All to best to her in future nominations. I hope she will win soon. She totally deserves it. On the other hand, now I wondered why there isn’t a wax figure of her in Madame Tussauds Museum in Hong Kong or a star (handprint) of her in Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars, since her popularity is no doubt apparent.

She had also been actively involved into charity and community works too. Her 25 years of contribution to Hong Kong entertainment industry which has left an immense impact to the whole Asia Pacific should be recognized further. I’m taking off a bit of my time to highlight on that here. And one more thing, do you wonder why I suddenly wrote a post about her on this day? Today is actually her birthday. She turned 41 this year. Never looking old, and body fit all the time. Amazing. Most of the other singers coming out in similar period with her back in 1980s and 1990s had either settled down, married, or retired, but Sammi appears to have not given up, never rests and still standing high. All the best to her!
