No losing city in this year’s bid for 2024 Summer Olympic Games

Posted in Explosive News and Results with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 12, 2017 by vincentloy

The voting for the host city of 2024 Summer Olympic Games will take place on this coming September. Only two cities are remaining in the bid; Paris and Los Angeles. In an extraordinary International Olympic Committee Session held yesterday, the committee approved a decision to award the games to both cities, one in 2024 and another one in 2028.

So, there wouldn’t be any losing city in this year’s bid for the games. If a city receives lesser number of votes in the voting, it will still host the games, but that would be the next edition (4 years later) than originally intended. That’s certainly good news for both Paris and Los Angeles. I have to admit both cities are more than capable to host this world’s largest international multi-sport event.

Which city do you think will get the 2024 games? My personal choice would be Paris. If I’m not mistaken, Paris has submitted bid a number of times in the last few editions of the games but lost every time. I remembered the city lost to London for 2012 games by only a few votes. The last time that Paris has hosted the games was in 1924. If Paris win the right to host 2024 games, it will be coincidentally marking 100th anniversary since the last Olympics in the city. I also like the simplicity of its logo showing the number ’24’ that also designed to resemble their iconic Eiffel Tower.

Check out their bidding’s presentation clips below:

Paris 2024

Los Angeles 2024

So my choice is Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028. This means that those cities which intend to bid for 2028 games has to drop out their plan and bid for 2032 games instead. I think this move will make the bidding for 2032 games to be more intense and exciting as more cities are expected to join the race by then. A joint bid by Malaysia and Singapore is explored and is possible for the 2032 games’ bid. I would love to see that but I think our chance is pretty low. It will be hard to resolve on many issues when more than one country is involved in a single games. Malaysia and Singapore have not even hosted Asian Games before (although Malaysia has hosted Commonwealth Games and Singapore has hosted Youth Olympic Games). I can only elaborate further on our chance if the joint bid is confirmed, and that is long way to go.

Best of TVB Dramas for the Year 2016

Posted in Explosive News and Results with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 19, 2016 by vincentloy

This year, I have watched 11 Cantonese dramas by TVB, the biggest television station in Hong Kong. The station usually released over 20 dramas every year and it’s not bad that I have watched about half of them this year. There are awards presentation in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong to recognize the best of TVB series, actors, actresses and programmes annually. For me personally, I have my own set of selection for which series or cast that I think is the best out of the dramas that I have watched.

Kindly take note that this only applies to the dramas that I have watched and that is unfortunate for the dramas that I missed but are still good and praise-worthy. However, I usually covered major and heavily-debated dramas and this year is not an exception. The previous results from the Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards, Malaysia’s TVB Star Awards and Hong Kong’s TVB Anniversary Awards are not influencing my decision but serve as the precedents for my selection.

TVB Dramas in 2016 that I have watched:

  • Love as a Predatory Affair.
  • Short End of the Stick.
  • Fashion War.
  • The Last Healer in Forbidden City.
  • My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan.
  • Presumed Accidents.
  • House of Spirits.
  • A Fist Within Four Walls.
  • Brother’s Keeper II.
  • My Lover from the Planet Meow.
  • Dead Wrong.

So, here below is my picks for the best of TVB dramas (excluding their variety programmes) for the year 2016 in 15 categories. Some categories are new and not available in the other awards presentation.

Best Drama – A Fist Within Four Walls.

(Other top 4: Short End of the Stick, Presumed Accidents, House of Spirits, Dead Wrong)

屋老友记-1

‘A Fist Within Four Walls’ topped my list of selection above while ‘House of Spirits’ came in runner-up in number of picks. My selection above has very slight difference only if compared to the awards result in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong this year. It’s more or less the same names in most categories. I believe most of the people out there would be more satisfied with my picks here than the result by the TVB Anniversary Awards 2016 held yesterday.

The annual TVB awards in Malaysia is coming soon. The TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2016 will be held on 26th November in Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. For those who enjoyed watching Hong Kong dramas every year, then you shouldn’t miss this coming event, of which you can attend the show by obtaining the tickets or by watching its broadcast on that evening. Its nomination list has just been released recently and as usual, I will post the list here in my blog along with my personal picks and comments (* for top 3 or 5, and ** for my favourite for winning).

My Favourite TVB Drama Series
“Speed of Life”
“Short End of the Stick” *
“Fashion War”
“Over Run Over”
“Blue Veins”
“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”
“Presumed Accidents”
“House of Spirits” *
“A Fist Within Four Walls” **
“Brother’s Keeper II”
“Law dis-Order”
“My Lover from the Planet Meow”
“Two Steps from Heaven”

Opinion: Actually I’m still undecided between ‘House of Spirits’ and ‘A Fist Within Four Walls’. Both are great dramas and furthermore they were aired back-to-back that time, so it made me harder to pick one from them. I’m happy if any of the two win.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Leading Role
Wayne Lai (“Short End of the Stick”) *
Vincent Wong (“Over Run Over”)
Kevin Cheng (“Blue Veins”)
Kent Cheng (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Lawrence Ng (“Presumed Accidents”)
Bobby Au Yeung (“House of Spirits”) **
Ruco Chan (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) *
Benjamin Yuen (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Kenneth Ma (“Inspector Gourmet”)
Edwin Siu (“Brother’s Keeper II”)
Alex Fong (“Law dis-Order”)
Liu Kai Chi (“Law dis-Order”)
Moses Chan (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)
Bosco Wong (“Two Steps from Heaven”)
Louis Cheung (“Two Steps from Heaven”)

Opinion: I love Bobby Au and Ruco Chan’s performances this year. Since Ruco won this last year, I will reserve this for Bobby. He is awesome in ‘House of Spirits’.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role
Natalie Tong (“Speed of Life”)
Sisley Choi (“Fashion War”)
Tracy Chu (“Over Run Over”)
Alice Chan (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Eliza Sam (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Maggie Shiu (“Between Love & Desire”) *
Nancy Wu (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) **
Grace Chan (“Brother’s Keeper II”)
Mandy Wong (“Law dis-Order”)
Ali Lee (“Law dis-Order”)
Kristal Tin (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”) *
Priscilla Wong (“Two Steps from Heaven”)

Opinion: Why are this list filled with mostly new and inexperienced actresses who do not deserve to be nominated at all? And I would actually prefer Kristal to be nominated in ‘Brother’s Keeper II’ since she did another great job in that sequel of which its predecessor won her Best Actress and Most Favourite Female Character in TVB Anniversary Awards back then.

My Favourite TVB Actor in a Supporting Role
Raymond Cho (“Short End of the Stick”) **
Power Chan (“Short End of the Stick”) *
Him Law (“Fashion War”)
Ngo Ka Nin (“The Last Healer in Forbidden City”)
Joel Chan (“Blue Veins”)
Mat Yeung (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Lai Lok Yi (“Presumed Accidents”) *
Cheung Wing Hong (“House of Spirits”) *
Philip Ng (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Carlo Ng (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) *
Louis Yuen (“Brother’s Keeper II”)
Hugo Ng (“Brother’s Keeper II”)
Eddie Kwan (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)

Opinion: Since ‘Short End of the Stick’ is released too early this year and will be usually forgotten by year end for the award season, I think it shall deserve some recognition at least and this is the perfect category for it. I’m fine with Raymond Cho or Power Chan winning for this one. They were really good in that drama, not to mention funny as well.

My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role
Akina Hong (“The Executioner”)
Lin Xia Wei (“Short End of the Stick”) *
Kingdom Yuen (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”) *
Joyce Tang (“House of Spirits”) **
Koni Lui (“House of Spirits”) *
Grace Wong (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) *
Moon Lau (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Candice Chiu (“Daddy Dearest”)
Jade Leung (“Brother’s Keeper II”)
Florence Kwok (“Law dis-Order”)
Vivien Yeo (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)
Katy Kung (“Two Steps from Heaven”)

Opinion: How is it possible that Joyce Tang is here, and not in leading role category. She stand a good chance of winning even in lead category. Since she is downgraded to this supporting category, I’m rooting for her to win this definitely. She gave brilliant performance in ‘House of Spirits’. This category is actually quite strong this year.

My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actor
Bob Cheung (“Over Run Over”, “House of Spirits”, “Between Love & Desire”)*
Cheung Wing Hong (“The Last Healer in Forbidden City, “House of Spirits”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”)**
Brian Chu (“Fashion War”, “Presumed Accidents”, “Between Love & Desire”)
Matthew Ho (“Brother’s Keeper II”, “Law dis-Order”)
Mark Ma (“Speed of Life”, “K9 Cop”, “Come Home Love: Dinner at 8”, “Presumed Accidents”, “Between Love & Desire”, “Inspector Gourmet”) *
James Ng (“Come Home Love, “Blue Veins”)
Brian Tse (“Come Home Love, “Love as a Predatory Affair”)

Opinion: Only realized Cheung Wing Hong’s performances this year as the stood out one among the rest.

My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actress
Toby Chan (“Speed of Life”, “Short End of the Stick”, “Fashion War”, “Daddy Dearest”)
Stephanie Ho (“Love as a Predatory Affair”)
Katy Kung (“Come Home Love, “The Executioner”, “Two Steps from Heaven”)*
Moon Lau (“Angel In-the-Making”, “Over Run Over”, “Blue Veins”, “House of Spirits”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”)**
Zoie Tam (“The Executioner”, “Over Run Over”, “Presumed Accidents”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”)
Roxanne Tong (“Fashion War”, “My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”, “Between Love & Desire”, “A Fist Within Four Walls”, “Come Home Love: Dinner at 8”)*
Jacqueline Wong (“Inspector Gourmet”)

Opinion: I think only Moon Lau stood out among the other nominees this year. Her acting has been very realistic and natural so far.

My Favourite TVB On Screen Couple
Jason Chan & Samantha Ko (“Love as a Predatory Affair”)
Benjamin Yuen & Natalie Tong (“Speed of Life”)
Wayne Lai & Nancy Wu (“Short End of the Stick”)
Raymond Cho & Lin Xia Wei (“Short End of the Stick”)
Bosco Wong & Linda Chung (“K9 Cop”)*
Vincent Wong & Tracy Chu (“Over Run Over”)
Kevin Cheng, Kay Tse & Grace Chan (“Blue Veins”)
Kent Cheng & Alice Chan (“My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan”)
Ruco Chan & Nancy Wu (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)**
Benjamin Yuen & Grace Wong (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)*
Philip Ng & Moon Lau (“A Fist Within Four Walls”)*
Edwin Siu & Grace Chan (“Brother’s Keeper II”)*
Kenneth Ma & Eliza Sam (“Inspector Gourmet”)
Moses Chan, Kristal Tin & Nancy Wu (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)
Bosco Wong, Edwin Siu & Priscilla Wong (“Two Steps from Heaven”)

Opinion: How can there be three persons nominated together? It’s a couple, not a triangle relationship. Anyway, I will vote for Ruco Chan and Nancy Wu. Their chemistry and pairing in ‘A Fist Within Four Walls’ are amazing.

My Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song
我們都受傷 (“Angel In-the-Making”) – Jinny Ng
最真心一對 (“Over Run Over”) – Stephanie Ho
天地不容 (“Blue Veins”) – Hubert Wu
從未知道你最好 (“A Fist Within Four Walls”) – Ruco Chan & Nancy Wu**
喵喵 (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”) – Auston Lam, Alvin Ng & Penny Chan

Opinion: Out of the five nominees, I have only heard the one in ‘A Fist Within Four Walls’. So my vote automatically goes to that one.

My Favourite Top 15 TVB Drama Characters
Tony Hung (“Angel In-the-Making”)
Elaine Yiu (“Angel In-the-Making”)
Kitty Yuen (“Love as a Predatory Affair”)*
King Kong (“Love as a Predatory Affair”)

Kristal Tin (“My Lover from the Planet Meow”)*
Bosco Wong (“Two Steps from Heaven”)*
Louis Cheung (“Two Steps from Heaven”)
Priscilla Wong (“Two Steps from Heaven”)
Katy Kung (“Two Steps from Heaven”)

Opinion: Too many characters. Not much to comment. I will just list down my 15 choices.

My Favourite TVB Variety Programme
“Sunday Stage Fight”**
“Kansai Raider”
“A Starry Homecoming”
“Chow HK Block to Block”
“Taipei High Hi”
“All Work No Pay Holidays – India”
“The Magicians’ Game of Thrones”*
“Good Cheap Eats (Sr. 5)”
“I Heart HK”*
“Mr. Hong Kong Contest 2016” & “Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2016”

Opinion: Usually those funny game shows win my heart. This year, I go for the very interesting and hilarious ‘Sunday Stage Fight’.

My Favourite TVB Enrichment Programme
“Sidewalk Scientist (Sr. 4)”
“Do Did Eat”*
“Not Far but Away (Sr. 2)”
“Auspicious Festivals”
“My Handy Man”
“Wellness on the Go 4 – Going Green and Sustainable Living”
“All Things Girl Malaysia Version Season Two”
“Am I Healthy? (Sr. 2)”
“5 Kids and a Bloke”

Opinion: I only watched ‘Do Did Eat’. So my one and only pick.

My Favourite TVB Host in Variety Programme
Sammi Cheung, Ali Lee, Kaki Leung, Mayanne Mak, Roxanne Tong & Jacqueline Wong (“Sidewalk Scientist (Sr. 4)”)
Sammy Leung & Sharon Chan (“Sunday Stage Fight”)*
Carol Cheng & Fama (“Do Did Eat”)**

Bob Lam, Louis Yan & Jinny Ng (“The Magicians’ Game of Thrones”)
Maria Cordero & Luk Ho Ming (“Good Cheap Eats Sr. 5”)
Eric Tsang & Various Artistes (“I Heart HK”)*

Opinion: It’s hard for me to choose between my top 3 picks in this category. But if insist on one, I will go with Carol Cheng and Fama in ‘Do Did Eat’. Their collaboration is somehow awkward but interesting.

As a loyal supporter to TVB series since many years ago, I’m glad that my country, Malaysia do organize an annual awards presentation to honour the best of Hong Kong TVB’s series and programmes in the past years. Last time, it was called Astro Wah Lai Toi Drama Awards. Then, it is changed to My Astro On Demand Favourites Awards. And since last year, the awards has been using the name ‘TVB Star Awards Malaysia’. And this year, TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2014 (TVB馬來西亞星光薈萃頒獎典禮2014) will be held on 23rd November 2014 from 8pm at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands.

12) Overachievers

My opinion on Top 5: Bounty Lady, Storm in a Cocoon, Black Heart White Soul, Line Walker, Overachievers.
My pick: Line Walker.
Comment: I think ‘Outbound Love’ is going to replace ‘Bounty Lady’ to be in top 5 since parts of the series is shot in Malaysia, hence slightly more popular. Anyway, ‘Line Walker’ is the best so far. Dark horse would be ‘Black Heart White Soul’.

My Favorite TVB Leading Actor

01) Roger Kwok (Black Heart White Soul)
02) Ruco Chan (Outbound Love)
03) Joe Ma (Tiger Cubs 2)
04) Wong Cho Lam (Come on Cousin)

My pick: Raymond Lam (Line Walker).
Comment: I knew Roger Kwok did very well in Black Heart White Soul. But for me, I think Raymond Lam deserved it very much this year too from his outstanding performance in Line Walker. Hence, I will put Roger Kwok as dark horse.

12) Lin Xia-wei (Outbound Love)

My opinion on Top 5: Sharon Chan, Natalie Tong, Mandy Wong, Leanne Li, Elena Kong.
My pick: Elena Kong (Line Walker).
Comment: No one stands out in supporting actress role this year. If Nancy Wu from ‘The Ultimate Addiction’ is in this supporting category rather than the strong leading category, then I will pick her. So, what’s your choice? I think I’m a little biased towards ‘Line Walker’. We’ll see the result in a month. I didn’t include the nomination for some other not-so-important categories. No one cares about those host or programmes sections. By the way, this awards presentation is always seen as a hint or prelude to the prestigious TVB Anniversary Awards. But the nomination for that one isn’t even out yet. I wonder how many TVB artistes would come this year.

It’s Germany VS Argentina in FIFA World Cup 2014’s Final!

Posted in Explosive News and Results with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 10, 2014 by vincentloy

Congratulations to both Germany and Argentina for winning their respective semi-final match. Both are now only one step away from the trophy, of which only one team could enjoy the fame of being crowned the champion in the end. Yes! The most anticipated football match, the FINAL of FIFA World Cup 2014 between Germany and Argentina will finally take place this Sunday (Monday’s early morning in Malaysia) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I promised myself to watch that match (I skipped all the earlier matches).

10459091_907699349247395_2709590581632808472_o

It’s quite a long journey to be able to reach to the final stage; from collecting points in preliminary rounds in respective group, to last 16 matches, then to Quarterfinal, and last but not least winning the Semifinal. There are 64 matches in total, of which by now, there are only two more remaining; of course the FINAL and also the third-placing match (Brazil vs. Netherlands). Well, the latter isn’t the focus as the furthest the winning team of the match can get is only to be named the second runner-up of the tournament. Final is the one that the whole world will be excited for.

On Tuesday’s night, the result of the first semi-final match between Germany and Brazil is the most shocking of the whole tournament. 7-1! Germany with a whopping seven goals while the host nation, Brazil had only one. The match has been described as the most humiliating and embarrassing play by the Brazil team sadly. I knew many were supporting Brazil, and even before the match took place, everyone is predicting 50-50 outcome. The two are strong countries in football and neck-to-neck result is expected. I didn’t watch that match, but waken up that day to hear that result is really surprising.

My favourite pick is Germany but I never thought that Brazil would be defeated to such scale. It’s already semifinal! Perhaps, there are three reasons why they ended up losing so badly on that match;

(1) absence of Neymar, a successful skillful player whom is admitted to hospital due to injury in earlier matches.

(2) mounting pressure as their country is the host of this tournament. The stadium is packed full of their supporters, and that could lead to extreme stress for the players wanting so much to get things right not to disappoint them.

(3) few earlier scored goals by the German team had easily dashed the hope of the Brazilian players and broken their mood and spirit to go on.

(4) poor defense and tactics from the Brazilian team, while German has their luck that day.

Well, the match is over, and Brazilian team has to move on too. Let’s hope that they won’t contribute that kind of lousy performance again in the third-placing match, and most importantly in future matches too. Football means so much to their country.

This 7-1 result has been the chat topic the whole day yesterday. That particular match has created such a worldwide buzz that it is also been recognized by Twitter as the most tweeted match in the history of the site. This is not the case for the other semi-final match between Argentina and Netherlands of which the result is not that surprising. Both score no goals, and in the end, Argentina prevails with 4-2 in penalty kicks. Nothing much to comment on this match.

So, time for my last prediction. For third-placing match between Brazil and Netherlands, my pick is Netherlands. They have done fairly well, and looking from Brazil’s extremely devastating performance in the semi-final, Netherlands has the advantage unless Brazil returned to their top form (but it’s a bit too late). And….for the FINAL, I guess 60% winning chance for Germany and 40% for Argentina. I’m still choosing Germany. A solid team. Both of them appeared in Final back in 1986 once (Argentina won) and also in 1990 (Germany won). This is their third encounter in FIFA World Cup Final. Who will win? Germany? Argentina? Hmm…Three more days to the FINAL! Ole…ole…ole…ole..ole! Ole!!! Ole!!!

32nd Hong Kong Film Awards 2013 nomination list

Posted in Explosive News and Results with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 19, 2013 by vincentloy

The nomination list for the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards 2013 had been announced a month ago. Usually, I didn’t catch up with this awards presentation that honours the best in Hong Kong film industry for the past year annually which is equivalent to US’ Academy Awards or UK’s BAFTA Awards. Usually, most of the nominated films are those much complex and are more into ‘artistic’ value which is always being perceived as boring. That wouldn’t be suitable for me. However, for this year’s nomination list, most of the films that made it are of action or thriller category. Something surprising.

Here’s below is the official nomination list for the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards 2013 which would be held in April 2013. That is quite far from now, which allows a long time of speculation on who will win the top honours offered. Right after the list of each category, I would provide some of my brief comments. Some categories came with no comments. The Bullet Vanishes and Cold War lead the nominations (and I didn’t watch both).

21400_500

Best Picture
Vulgaria <低俗喜劇>
Motorway <車手>
The Bullet Vanishes <消失的子彈>
The Viral Factor <逆戰>
Cold War <寒戰>

Comment: Out of these five films, I have only watched ‘The Viral Factor’ since most of the film took place in my city, Kuala Lumpur. It’s a film full of action that stars Nicholas Tse from Hong Kong and Jay Chou from Taiwan, two very popular artists. But I don’t think it would win. Instead, I think movie like ‘Cold War’ would take this award.

Best Director
Cheang Pou Soi (Motorway)
Pang Ho Cheung (Love in the Buff)
Law Chi Leung (The Bullet Vanishes)
Dante Lam (The Viral Factor)
Longman Leung and Sunny Luk (Cold War)

Comment: Usually if the director of a particular film win this, then the film itself would grab the best picture. So, I vote for Longman Leung and Sunny Luk for Cold War. Actually, The Viral Factor’s director, Dante Lam deserves very much too due to his impressive directing effort in The Viral Factor.

Best Screenplay
Pang Ho Cheung, Luk Yee Sum, and Lam Chiu Wing (Vulgaria)
Pang Ho Cheung, Luk Yee Sum (Love in the Buff)
Law Chi Leung, Yeung Sin Ling (The Bullet Vanishes)
Longman Leung, Sunny Luk (Cold War)
Alan Mak and Felix Chong (The Silent War)

Best Actor
Nick Cheung (Nightfall)
Chapman To (Vulgaria)
Sean Lau (The Bullet Vanishes)
Tony Leung Ka Fai (Cold War)
Tony Leung Chiu Wai (The Silent War)

Comment: Out of these five nominees, four had won this award before respectively. Only Chapman To didn’t. He had contributed so many years to Hong Kong film industry but his effort is not much seen as he usually goes into comedic role. But I think now should be the time for him to win this. He totally deserved it. Sometimes, it’s not easy to portray a funny role. He did it brilliantly well.

Best Actress
Zhou Xun (The Great Magician)
Miriam Yeung (Love in the Buff)
Sammi Cheng (Romancing in Thin Air)
Elanne Kong (Love Lifting)
Zhou Xun (The Silent War)

Comment: Please give this to Sammi Cheng, one of my idols. She had been nominated for many times in previous years but didn’t make it eventhough she is so famous and had made much achievements in singing career. Eventhough Romancing in Thin Air is a boring film, but Sammi performed exceptionally amazing as a mostly sad character in this one. It’s time for her to get this. Zhou Xun is always a big competitor to Sammi (she won this award in the year when Sammi had high chance for her performance in Everlasting Regrets several years ago). What? Elanne Kong is in the nomination? What a big surprise.

Best Supporting Actor
Ronald Cheng (Vulgaria)
Liu Kai Chi (The Bullet Vanishes)
Gordon Lam (Cold War)
Chapman To (Diva)
Alex Man (The Bounty)

Comment: If Chapman To didn’t get best actor, then at least give this to him. His contribution should be credited. Other nominees should be looked down too.

Best Supporting Actress
Susan Shaw (Vulgaria)
Dada Chen (Vulgaria)
Jiang Yiyan (The Bullet Vanishes)
Elaine Jin (The Viral Factor)
Mavis Fan (The Silent War)

Best New Performer
Zhang Lanxin (CZ12)
Joyce Feng (The Last Tycoon)
Jayden Yuan (Tai Chi 0)
Alex Tsui (Cold War)
Sammy Shum (Lan Kwai Fong 2)

Comment: Out of these five, I find Sammy outshines the others. But Sammy’s nomination is a last minute call after June Lam is disqualified.

Best Cinematography
Andrew Lau and Jason Kwan (The Last Tycoon)
Chan Chi Ying (The Bullet Vanishes)
Kenny Tse (The Viral Factor)
Jason Kwan and Kenny Tse (Cold War)
Anthony Pun (The Silent War)

Best Editing
Yau Chi Wai (CZ12)
David Richardson and Allen Leung (Motorway)
Chung Wai Chiu (The Viral Factor)
Kwong Chi Leung and Ron Chan (The Bullet Vanishes)
Kwong Chi Leung and Wong Hoi (Cold War)

Best Art Direction
Yee Chung Man and Eric Lam (The Last Tycoon)
Yip Kam Tim (Tai Chi 0)
Lau Sai Wan (The Guillotines)
Silver Cheung and Lee Kin Wai (The Bullet Vanishes)
Man Lim Chung (The Silent War)

Best Costume Design and Make-Up
Yee Chung Man and Jessie Dai (The Great Magician)
Yip Kam Tim (Tai Chi 0)
Dora Ng (The Guillotines)
Stanley Cheung (The Bullet Vanishes)
Man Lim Chung (The Silent War)

Best Action Choreography
Jackie Chan and He Jun (Chinese Zodiac)
Sammo Hung (Tai Chi 0)
Chin Ka Lok and Wong Wai Fai, Ng Hoi Tong (Motorway)
Dante Lam, Chin Ka Lok, Wong Wai Fai, Ng Hoi Tong (The Viral Factor)
Chin Ka Lok and Wong Wai Fai (Cold War)

Comment: Obvious 100% vote to The Viral Factor. A film full of great action as I remembered.

Best Original Film Score
Chan Kwong Wing and Yu Peng (The Last Tycoon)
Teddy Robin and Tommy Wai (The Bullet Vanishes)
Peter Kam (Cold War)
Eman Lam and Veronica Lee (Diva)
Chan Kwong Wing (The Silent War)

Best Original Song
定風波 (from The Last Tycoon)
刀鋒偏冷 (from The Guillotines)
DoReMi (from Romancing in Thin Air)
戀無可戀 (from Lan Kwai Fong 2)
追風箏的風箏 (from Diva)

Comment: Sammi Cheng’s DoReMi won Golden Horse Awards last year for best original song. Hope she can continue her win here too. A very simple, little yet emotional song.

Best Sound Design
Kinson Tsang (The Guillotines)
Benny Chu and Steve Miller (Motorway)
Phyllis Cheng (The Bullet Vanishes)
Kinson Tsang (The Viral Factor)
Kinson Tsang (Cold War)

Best Visual Effects
Han Young Woo, Victor Wong, Patrick Chui, and Seong Ho Jang (CZ12)
Chas Chau, Kim Ho, Ng Yuen Fai, and A Law (Tai Chi 0)
Victor Wong (The Guillotines)
Law Wai Ho and Hellowing Cheung (Motorway)
Cecil Cheng (Cold War)

Best New Director

Nomination list for the 2012’s TVB 45th Anniversary Awards

Posted in Miscellaneous with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 17, 2012 by vincentloy

The nomination list for the annual TVB 45th Anniversary Awards 2012 is finally out! The awards presentation will be held on 17th December 2012, on Monday’s night. The annual awards presentation is usually held in early December, but is postponed to middle of the month for the two anniversary series, ‘Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles’ and ‘The Confidant’ to finish airing before final decision is made on the winners. However, for this year’s awards, it is up to the Hong Kong audiences to vote for the coveted Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Series.

Previously, it’s all under TVB’s executives to decide who will win on that night. However, after years of receiving complaints over their several badly-picked choices to the awards, they decided to attract more audiences to catch up with the awards by getting them involved in selecting the winners. Thus, it became advantage to artistes with huge fan base (like Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung) and disadvantage to some others especially the veteran (like Michelle Yim, Kenneth Ma). However, it is still up to TVB executives to pick the top 5 if I’m not mistaken. Now, here’s the official nomination list below. The one with a mark in the end are my top 5 picks while the one in bold are my top two favourites. I pick two, as I’m kind off in hard situation to choose only one.

Best Actor:

1. Wayne Lai in The Confidant*
2. Moses Chan in The Last Steep Ascent*
3. Kevin Cheng in Gloves Come Off*
4. Kenneth Ma in The Hippocratic Crush*
5. Raymond Lam in Highs and Lows*
6. Bosco Wong in Witness Insceurity
7. Damian Lau in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles
8. Roger Kwok in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts
9. Joe Ma in Tiger Cubs
10. Raymond Wong in Gloves Come Off

Comment: Based on voting, Raymond would win it easily. Furthermore, he had been in TVB for number of years, and it’s already time for him to be recognized as ‘Best’, and not only in ‘Most Favourite’. He did quite well in Highs and Lows too. The strongest dark horse would be Wayne Lai. Can he win TV King for the third time? Probably. His character as Li Lian Ying in anniversary drama, The Confidant is well-received.
Best Actress:

1. Michelle Yim in The Confidant*
2. Charmaine Sheh in When Heaven Burns*
3. Myolie Wu in Ghetto Justice 2*
4. Tavia Yeung in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles*
5. Fala Chen in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts
6. Linda Chung in Wintess Insecurity
7. Kate Tsui in Highs and Lows*
8. Aimee Chan in The Last Steep Ascent
9. Liza Wang in Divas in Distress
10. Niki Chow in Bottled Passion

Comment: Kate Tsui had a breakthrough performance in Highs and Lows. However, I find it’s not the time yet for her to get this Best Actress. Sorry to her fans. Next year probably. It’s year for Tavia. Similarly to Raymond, she had a huge fan base too, and that she had been in TVB for many years. Her acting is no doubt to be questioned. The strongest dark horse would be Michelle Yim, portraying the challenging role of Empress Dowager Cixi in The Confidant. However, she won this before and her chance is slimmer already. But I do really like her in the drama. She looks amazing and her performance is fantastic.

My Favorite TV Male Character:

1. Kevin Cheng in Ghetto Justice 2*
2. Moses Chan in The Last Steep Ascent
3. Wayne Lai in The Confidant*
4. Raymond Lam in Highs and Lows*
5. Kenneth Ma in The Hippocratic Crush*
6. Bosco Wong in Witness Insecurity*
7. Bobby Au Yeung in House of Harmony and Vengeance
8. Michael Miu in Highs and Lows
9. Raymond Wong in The Confidant
10. Damian Lau in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles

Comment: Kenneth, for me, this award is for you. Similarly to Kate, it’s not yet the time for you to clinch the Best Actor. But after seeing such awesome and likeable performance from him in The Hippocratic Crush, he should get this Most Favourite award. The strong dark horse for this category would be again, Raymond Lam which is heavily brought up by TVB.

My Favorite TV Female Character:

1. Michelle Yim in The Confidant*
2. Charmaine Sheh in When Heaven Burns*
3. Myolie Wu in Ghetto Justice 2*
4. Crystal Tin in King Maker
5. Tavia Yeung in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles*
6. Tavia Yeung in The Hippocratic Crush
7. Kate Tsui in Highs and Lows*
8. Fala Chen in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts
9. Eliza Sam in Divas in Distress
10. Niki Chow in Bottled Passion

Comment: This is so going to be given to Kate. She deserves this, to push her closer to Best Actress award soon. Her character in Highs and Lows is extraordinary and she had definitely improved much in her acting. I didn’t like her in earlier dramas, but after seeing her fantastic work in Highs and Lows, I must say she nailed it. If Michelle or Tavia didn’t win Best Actress, then either one of them would be a strong dark horse here.

Most Improved Male Character:

1. Gam Kong
2. Him Law
3. Edwin Siu
4. Oscar Leung
5. Vincent Wong

Comment: Not much to comment for this category. Oscar had been in TVB for so long and there isn’t any recognition for him yet. Probably this is the year? Edwin Siu is a dark horse in this category. He had been improving quite steadily in recent years.

Most Improved Female Character:

1. Mandy Wong
2. Eliza Sam
3. Christine Kuo
4. Katy Kung
5. Cilla Kung

Comment: I didn’t watch Eliza Sam’s performance but I knew that she had been receiving much attention lately. I have seen Mandy Wong’s performance and it’s good, so I’m choosing her. For others, nothing much to comment.

Best Supporting Actor:

1. Power Chan in The Confidant*
2. Koo Ming Wah in Divas in Distress*
3. Oscar Leung in L’Escargot
4. Elliot Ngok in The Confidant
5. Vincent Wong in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles
6. Alex Lam in Ghetto Justice 2*
7. Kenny Wong in The Last Steep Ascent*
8. Ram Tseung in Witness Insecurity
9. Him Law in The Hippocratic Crush*
10. Edwin Siu in Daddy Good Deeds

Comment: Firstly recognized as hot favourite to win Best Supporting Actor earlier, Koo Ming Wah as So Gay now faces a tough opponent; Power Chan. I find Power Chan’s performance in The Confidant wonderful. Both are like in 50/50 situation now. Both must be nervous.

Best Supporting Actress:

1. Mandy Wong in L’Escargot*
2. Rachel Kan in Master of Play
3. Mary Hon in Three Kingdoms RPG
4. Florence Kwok in King Maker*
5. Law Lan in The Last Steep Ascent
6. Christine Kuo in Ghetto Justice 2
7. Nancy Wu in Gloves Come Off*
8. Elena Kong in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles*
9. Eliza Sam in Divas in Distress
10. Aimee Chan in The Confidant*

Comment: On this category, I have no one in bold (no one picked as my top two favourites. Not much comment on this category. Wait…Nancy Wu should be nominated in The Confidant since her character is quite emphasized and favoured, causing an alternative ending for her character to be filmed lately.

Overall, this nomination list is quite similar to that of Malaysia’s My AOD Favourites Awards 2012 which is going to be held in early December and acts as an early hint to this TVB Awards. For best series category, all series aired in 2012 are nominated, and the top 5 would be picked by TVB executives for audiences voting. Too bad, only Hong Kong audiences can vote. For me, as a Malaysian, I can only vote for Malaysia’s AOD Awards, and not this one. The result will be announced with the awards presentation broadcast live on 17th December. I have been catching up on this annual awards every year since 2008.
