Supertall constructions around the world now that are nearing completion (Update – April 2015)

It’s been quite some time since I touched on the topic of skyscrapers in my blog here. My interest in skyscrapers never fades after all the years. While the completed skyscrapers look amazing and stands tall as a symbol of human’s present achievement, I particularly set my eyes on those under-construction as these would be mostly much taller, more record-breaking and would push beyond human’s limitation to reach to the sky in near future. Here below are some (not all) of the major supertall constructions under-going across the world that are nearing respective completion (except the last one, no.9):

1. 432 Park Avenue, New York City, USA.

425.5 metres tall, 88 floors, expected to be completed this year (2015), will be New York City’s second tallest building once completed, currently topped-out as the world’s tallest residential building. Architect: Rafael Vinoly Architects.

It feels so great seeing these buildings rising up taller and taller. Now, we are on our mark to go beyond 1 kilometre in height of building. What’s next? 1.5km? 2km? Possible. But is that feasible currently?

Architectural Insight: Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition

Late last week, the next step in the long road to Guggenheim Helsinki moved forward when the museum released the final renderings from all six finalists. After being selected by the 11-member jury late last year from a record-breaking pool of 1,715 submissions, the finalists have been refining their designs for the Finnish outpost of the museum for the past five months. Their proposals are still anonymous, since the plans have yet to be paired up with the six firms still in competition: Fake Industries Architectural Agonism (New York/Barcelona/Sydney), SMAR Architecture Studio (Madrid/Australia), AGPS Architecture (Zurich/Los Angeles), Asif Khan (London), Haas Cook Zemmrich STUDIO2050 (Stuttgart) and Moreau Kusunoki Architect (Paris).

“The concept was to maybe get our most complete interface to the public in Helsinki,” says Troy Conrad Therrien, Curator, Architecture and Digital Initiatives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum. “This is the moment of the big unveiling. The idea was to tell the whole story. This is an interesting moment in architecture where architectural production is becoming faster because of digital processes; In the next several years, the mark of 1,700 will potentially get passed.”

Stage II Finalists Composite

In addition to releasing the final renderings, the museum has also mounted an interactive exhibition, Guggenheim Helsinki Now: Six Finalist Designs Unveiled, at the Kunsthalle Helsinki in Finland, featuring an array of interactive displays and public events (Jeanne Gang and Bjarke Ingels gave lectures yesterday). Finnish architect and theorist Martti Kalliala and Hugo Liu, principal scientist for eBay, built a data-based display that looks at contemporary museum architecture and analyzes the entire competition data set. As we’ve seen before, the thousands of entries provide quite a lot of fodder for number-crunching.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the finalist roll out is the Matchmaker Game, designed by Liu, that matches users to one of the six designs based on a series of personality-drive questions (which speculative museum model are you?). Hopefully this won’t lead to a swipe-left analysis of future proposals. The final renderings, as well as competitor comments, are below. The winner will be chosen June 23.

Entry GH-04380895

The design of the Guggenheim Helsinki and its woven landscape are based upon a sensitive and sympathetic approach to the context and nature of Helsinki. The design encourages people to flow within a new cultural core that is linked to the rest of the city, through the port promenade and the pedestrian footbridge to the Observatory Park. This flexible access welcomes not only the visitors but also serves as a key cultural destination for the community.

The museum skyline is composed by independent volumes, highlighted by a landmark tower. These fragmented art exhibition spaces allow strong integration with outdoor display and events, while the lighthouse offers a new perspective over the city. This new museum concept together with the charred timber façade echoes the process of regeneration that occurs when forests burn and then grow back stronger.

Entry GH-1128435973

The museum is composed of two spaces – one for exhibitions, the other a public forum – that come together in a dance involving art and the city, gradually engaging in multiple movements, from a pas de deux, to a pas de trois, etcetera. One space of the museum is on the dock level of the port facility, acknowledging the site’s industrial function as a vital memory for the new ensemble. Part gathering place, part community center, part incubator for innovation, it is conceived as a social commons within the city.

The other space of the museum houses art exhibitions. Hovering in the air, it offers a place for contemplation, with large open galleries, complementing its companion space below. Greater than the sum of its parts, the museum generates multiple relations among people, architecture, and the arts. With this, the Guggenheim Helsinki can engage a broad constituency of stakeholders, benefiting not only the arts, but the public at large.

Five timber towers huddle together at the edge of the Baltic Sea, forming a shimmering beacon on the shoreline.
Multiple forms produce an interplay of light and shadow that create an inspiring, enticing atmosphere, while glimpses of in-between spaces beckon visitors from near and far. The warmth and familiarity of the wood shingle façade creates a sense of belonging with the landscape, while an ethereal quality is expressed through its subtle oscillation, ruffling, as though brushed by the winds of the sea.

Helsinki Five seeks to engage a sense of discovery that is deeply informed by art, instigating close encounters between artwork and viewer, between art-maker and art-making. It is a play of hide and seek, light and dark, wide and close, in and out.

Entry GH 121371443

Our proposal takes the form of a Helsinki city block rotated to the harbourfront. Seven timber-clad galleries are stacked over a basement and three levels flanked by administration and open-format halls. Public spaces are formed between these and an intelligent textured glass skin wrapping the entirety to precisely diffuse light, translucent below, and transparent above. The lower galleries join as needed, while the third floor is one super-space. The variety enables a wide range of curatorial approaches.

The museum’s three entrances are arrived at by new cobble and gravel walking routes. Centrally a wide, convivial staircase helps visitors wayfind intuitively. “Art Kioski” annex for young Nordic art twins the historic Kauppahalli while a sculpture garden is enclosed to the south. In 1800s Helsinki city blocks were named after wild animals. The proposed new block will have the tactile familiarity of a pet’s fur. So we call this proposal “quiet animal”.

Entry GH-5631681770

The use of Street Space forms the basis for basic social discourse, from political gatherings to Art creation or community expressions. While an increasing “unofficial” art was blooming in the streets from the second half of the XX Century, Museums have been historically focused in Gallery Art, excluding Public Space production.

GH-5631681770 IMAGE 13

GH-5631681770 IMAGE 22

GH-5631681770 IMAGE 06

Future is “bottom up”. Museums have to change from institutions where information was directed in only one way: towards the viewer into institutions that are increasingly creating conversations with the citizen, prioritizing the human scale of a space over its merely sculptural value. Due to its particular climatic conditions. There are 2 cities in Helsinki. Summer Helsinki and Winter Helsinki. We propose a Strategy that could offer back to the City an Interior Street, Public Space at no additional cost to be used also the 6 cold months of the year. The combination of 2 programs -The Museum -Gallery Art- and The Extra Space -Street Art- in a single building allows us to explore the relationship between 2 complementary worlds. Using both factors, we had the chance to add, subtract, divide… We decided to multiply.

Entry GH-5059206475

Helsinki is a city of interiors. Due to its extreme climatic conditions, Helsinki’s civic society blossoms indoors. Our proposal for the Guggenheim Helsinki, 47 Rooms, extends this network using the architectural technologies that construct Helsinki’s interior citizenry: i.e. walls, doors, windows, and the machinery that defines atmospheric conditions. 47 Rooms contains nine rooms of 20x20m, twenty-seven of 6.5×6.5m six of 10x10m, two of 120x4m and one of 32x120m and three outdoor rooms. A multiplicity of chambers and climatic conditions will allow various museums to live together in the same building. The museum is ready to welcome individual visitors, families, local art scene, high school visits, young audiences, international tourists, groups of friends… 47 Rooms is a machine to provide singular and ever-changing experiences by opening and closing doors to different climates.

47 Rooms extends the logic through which Helsinki’s population already tempers their more intimate public spaces. Imitating the logic of the Sauna, each room’s final climatic conditions include certain degree of negotiation between the institution and its visitors. 47 Rooms means a strategic shift on Guggenheim’s identity: it embraces Helsinki focusing on interior climate rather than external appearance.

Which one of the 6 finalist proposals above that you like? I’m quite satisfied with the 1st, 3rd and 5th ones. The other three are also not bad. Each has their different views and directions on interpreting their interesting ideas through architectural design. It’s actually very subjective and hard to select the best out of these six.

Nepal Earthquake 2015.

On 25th April 2015, the day I’m enjoying myself up at the Genting Highlands for some cool air, relaxing moment and exciting concert, something tragic happened on the other side of the planet. I felt a bit bad for it. A massive earthquake measuring near to 8.0 magnitude occurred at Nepal on that unfortunate day which is also my sister’s birthday. An earthquake with that scale unfortunately led to massive damages and loss of thousand of lives. The reports today confirmed that over 4000 people died and over 8000 people injured. And the worst news, is that the figure is escalating.

nepal-quake-map-data

The first thing on my mind now is to send my prayer and blessing to those affected by the earthquake. May the deceased rest in peace and the others to stay strong and move on. Eventhough my prayer doesn’t seems helpful, but at least my heart is with them through this situation. Since Nepal is a very poor country, I believed many countries are now offering all sort of assistance to them.

nepal-earthquake_1

AP_nepal_earthquake_3_jt_150426_1_16x9_992

The earthquake was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since 1934 Nepal-Bihar Earthquake. Its magnitude was so huge that it also affects neighbouring countries; India, China, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Besides that, the earthquake triggered a massive avalanche on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain and killed at least 18 people whom were the mount climbers, and also hit one of the base camps. And that made the day as the most lethal day on the mountain. There is even a short clip recorded by one of the climbers when the avalanche struck.

2015-nepal-earthquake-everest-avalanche-disaster

Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square. It’s sad to see many priceless heritage buildings and historical architecture being damaged from this disaster. I heard that the affected region is home to many UNESCO sites. And besides that, continued aftershocks triggered panic throughout the whole region which is already heavily affected by the disaster.

On the other news, Malaysians are greeted with positive announcement recently as Lee Chong Wei, our nation’s most beloved badminton player, will be back on court playing for the country from next month onwards after being suspended for a doping case in last year’s Badminton World Championship. He was given an 8-months ban from playing, and that punishment backdated to begin from August last year when he started being under suspension. Hence, we will see him back in action from May 2015 onwards in upcoming major tournaments like Sudirman Cup, SEA Games, and most importantly, next year’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

We would love to see third showdown between Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan from China in the Olympics next year. Lin Dan had won both of that back in 2008 and 2012, while Chong Wei had to settle for silver. But that’s already a proud achievement for the country. Now, he has another chance for ‘revenge’ next year in Rio 2016. I’m glad that he received quite a light sentence, and he is actually innocent as he didn’t know the supplements he took contain banned substance. He is a great sportsman beloved by all Malaysians. That’s a fact. Looking forward to see him soon in badminton court. He is now ranked 30th, and hopefully he can jump back to 1st soon, the position he held earlier for a long period of time.

The past weekend: ‘Avengers 2’ twice, finished a drama, and went to Genting.

The title of this post basically sums up the things I have done or been through for the past weekend. I have been going through a mixture of feelings after these few days; excited, happy and also sad. Just weird. The following will explains why I am in that state, and hence as a warning here, if you are bored of this particular post I used to explain unnecessary stuff, then kindly skip off this one and proceed to the other interesting posts below. Haha…

For the first ‘Avengers’ movie back in 2012, I watched that once in the cinema. And now, its sequel; Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is released. And amazingly, I watched it in the cinema twice. Why? Because it is really that good and worth my money and time to go for second round. Wait? Does that mean I’m going to watch the next instalment ‘Avengers 3: Infinity Wars (Part 1 and 2) for three times? Wow…maybe. This is the time when the ‘comfortable success’ from the popular ‘Fast and Furious 7’ is going to be overtaken by Avengers: Age of Ultron. Everybody loves superheroes.

Up next, I did managed to finish a TVB series that had concluded its running yesterday. It’s a Hong Kong drama entitled ‘Romantic Repertoire’. This series gave me chance to learn new vocabulary. ‘Repertoire’? What is that? Ohh…it means ‘a stock of plays, dances, or pieces that a company or a performer knows or is prepared to perform’. Okay…that is somehow related to the series that centered on Cantonese opera and also on interior design. Two people from totally different working and lifestyle background gets in conflict and misunderstanding but later blossomed to a close relationship after a series of events that are captured in this 21-episode drama.

The series starred Moses Chan, Joyce Koi, Louise Lee, Jason Chan, Katy Kung, Evergreen Mak, Susan Tse, Oceane Zhu, etc. It’s a light drama to fill out my spare time every night on weekdays with no high expectation. So, I take it lightly; it’s still an entertaining series but as it develops further, it lacks drama and intensity. Nothing exciting or engaging. It is getting boring as it progresses but luckily, it’s just a short series. So, no major harm. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Romantic Repertoire’ a total of 6.9.

RomanticRepertoire2015TVB

As informed to you in my earlier post, I went up to Genting Highlands the last weekend and just returned home today to watch a concert by Sammi Cheng, a famous female Hong Kong singer whom is regarded as the Cantopop queen. Enjoyed her show, and I spent few hundred bucks for it. But that’s not bad compared to another many hundred bucks lost to Genting in casino. No luck was with me this time. I should have left when I won a bit in the beginning. The desire to continue caused me to lose and lose and lose. Haiz…nevermind, I treat it as a huge donation for Genting to further develop themselves. And yes, they are really developing now. The world’s first 20th Century Fox Theme Park is set to open next year (hopefully) at Genting and new hotel block is currently under construction.

Touch Mi Live in Malaysia @ 25/4/2015 at Genting Highlands

If not that I had a very bad luck time in casino, the past weekend would be way much happier for me after attended the exciting concert by Sammi Cheng, here in Malaysia. This is my third time watching her concert, and I’m never bored of it. If she comes again, I will watch again. Everytime she comes, she will be performing at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. Must be her favourite venue. She performed on last Friday and Saturday, and this is her first world tour stop after her 12 sold-out shows back in Hong Kong few month ago.

I went for the Saturday’s show. It started about 15 minutes later than the originally scheduled time of 8.30pm. But that’s alright. Not too late. Once the lights were switched off, everybody is screaming like mad in the indoor arena which is already full-house. And there she appeared on stage. The Cantopop queen! She started the show with some fast songs and were already getting all of us into the mood. Of course, the one thing I love the most from her is her slow romance songs which are mostly her classic hits back in 1990s. Yes, 1990s. Songs from almost 20 years ago.

11156234_1032759726742497_8824042251915040018_n

11069657_1032760116742458_7839480317433064815_n

Fortunately, she did performed many of her iconic songs too, and got us all to sing along with her. I remembered in the last two shows of her that I watched (few years ago), she delivered mostly new and had uninteresting selection of songs to perform. Furthermore, the audio system was too loud until we couldn’t really hear what she’s singing. Luckily, we didn’t see all that this time. The audio system is at the right volume, we can hear clearly Sammi’s singing (and therefore can admire her skills on that), and mostly important, the selection of songs are awesome this time.

11109191_1032762416742228_7530770533153729724_n

11070483_1032762890075514_1635103946973653021_n

Since I’m quite a fans of her, I remember most of the lyrics of the songs she performed that night. Wonderful. And I can say that I’m amazing because I don’t know Mandarin and yet I can remember that much of lyrics. Besides than performances, she also dazzled us with many beautiful dresses during the show. She is beautiful, but too thin. There are lesser talks from her this time, as she mentioned that she would prefer to use songs to describe her feelings and situations. Agreed with that. But when she talked, she always entertained us with some funny remarks, including dealing with everyone calling her as Mrs. Hui now (already confirmed her marriage to Andy Hui recently).

The show ended exactly after two hours, while everyone is hoping for more. We do think that two hours weren’t enough from her as she had actually a lot of songs that we wish to listen to from her live on stage. But anyway, it’s okay. We still had a great time during the show. Overall, it’s the best concert I have seen from her. It’s energetic, had great selection of songs and medleys, beautiful dresses, beautiful lighting and backdrop designs, and above all, wonderful singing by Sammi. Truly a great Cantopop queen even after so many years.

It’s time to assemble for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Couldn’t contain my excitement now as I have just returned home from watching ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. The thrill overwhelmed my mind now and erased the thought of sleeping at this time (already 1am). We have bought the tickets over a month earlier and so we got good seats. The showtimes were all in yellow or red indication (means full-house or almost fully occupied). How popular this movie is! Of course, it’s not a superhero movie, but a superheroes’ movie! All in one, and this is a sequel. The first one in 2012 is already a massive success, and so I’m sure this wouldn’t be anything behind.

10869325_591589580977275_2778898650041679518_o

In this second Avengers film, Tony Stark’s effort on peacekeeping program from artificial intelligence goes backfired when Ultron is born, a villainous robot determined to destroy humans. Gathering Avengers from first film, and also with addition of several new members to the team, the battle is getting bigger and leads to more revelation which will be further explained in its final chapter. Yes. To all Avengers’ fans, there is this third part of the franchise which will be like a conclusion. There will be Avengers: Infinity Wars (Part 1) in 2018 and (Part 2) in 2019. Long way to go, but now already excited for it after having seen the first two which are superb!

avengers-lineup

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ had a deeper story, a more complicated one. Not only it involves more characters, but it also tells us more about the scepter, the infinity stones, and several conflicting moments between the Avengers themselves. For me, it would be better if it’s not that complicated. At least, kids would enjoy this more. But right now, everything is still fine as long as the actions delivered are sufficient, and most importantly, awesome! We wouldn’t get tired of watching these superheroes in action! It’s simply dramatic, cool, and sometimes even funny at some point. Even the villain, Ultron here had a bit of humour, and I like it.

avengers-age-of-ultron-james-spader1

I’m also glad that its trailer didn’t expose much of its details especially the climax when a whole city is brought up (sorry…spoiler) and is planned to fall down like a meteor to destroy all humans on Earth. Besides that, every characters had their moment, but the best of them would be Hawkeye. I don’t really enjoy the getting-close relationship between Agent Romanoff and Banner (Hulk). The hilarious moments hit at the right place, while intensity is scattered all over for a thrilling ride. This is almost as good as the first Avengers film. It’s up on par in all levels. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ a total of 8.0. Had a great fun watching this!

Out of sudden, I miss Loki, the villain in the first Avengers movie, whom is also the stepbrother of Thor. Anyway, this time, the villain, Ultron is also terrifyingly good. Like the voice and the damage it can do with its artificial intelligence thingy. Too bad, the Avengers team in the end of this film isn’t complete after one of its members died (opps, spoiler again). Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision and Falcon are all here. More than 10 of them. Well, need not explain anymore. Watch it and you will like it. Maybe in near future, Spiderman will join back the team. And one more thing, please stay to wait for its brief mid-credit scene.

34th Hong Kong Film Awards yesterday.

Since I’m having the whole Sunday at home yesterday, I managed to watch major portion of the annual Hong Kong Film Awards held yesterday. This is the 34th edition of the awards, which is equivalent to the Oscars from the West. My overall thoughts of the awards presentation yesterday can be summarized into two phrases; boring ceremony and boring results.

11018320_896074617082267_6816943116014095919_n

20150417114926_0_HKFAA_1

The hosts of the ceremony are Gordon Lam, Jordan Chan and Miriam Yeung. This is a fresh grouping for hosting job, and they did it quite awfully. There isn’t any good chemistry between them and the way they delivered speeches or even funny remarks were awkward and unnatural. The ceremony that took over three hours long is also very dull and boring with lack of interesting segments or performances. The results are boring, expected, and bring not much surprise (except Ivana’s double win).  Hereby is the full list of nomination list with the winner in bold alongside with a bit of my opinions in certain categories.

Best Film

  • “The Midnight After”
  • “Aberdeen”
  •  “The Golden Era” WINNER
  •  “Dearest”
  •  “Overheard 3”

thegoldenera1

Opinion: Didn’t quite like ‘The Golden Era’ to win this. I’m not into artistic film which is usually very boring, but manages to steal the heart of judges always. The judges should start to get away from being blinded with ‘art’ movie (especially the ones mixed with biopic) and to treat the other much deserving movies. I would prefer ‘The Midnight After’ for its distinctive direction.

Best Director

  • Fruit Chan “The Midnight After”
  • Ann Hui, “The Golden Era” WINNER
  • Peter Chan, “Dearest”
  • Dante Lam, “That Demon Within”
  • Alan Mak, Felix Chong, “Overheard 3”

Opinion: How many times do the judges want Ann Hui to win? I knew she is a great director but it’s time to reward other talented directors too. But I actually had no objection on her winning. She deserved this year. She is now the record holder for most directing wins in this awards.

Best Screenplay

  • Chan Fai-hung, Kong Ho-yan, Fruit Chan, “The Midnight After”
  • Pang Ho Cheung, “Aberdeen”
  • Li Qiang, “The Golden Era”
  • Zhang Ji, “Dearest”
  • Alan Mak, Felix Chong, “Overheard 3” WINNER

Best Actor

  • Eddie Peng Yuyan, “Rise of the Legend”
  • Lau Ching-wan, “Insanity”
  • Huang Bo, “Dearest”
  • Daniel Wu, “That Demon Within”
  • Lau Ching-wan, “Overheard 3” WINNER

Opinion: Even Nick Cheung had won this twice, so it’s time for Sean Lau. This is his second best actor win. He deserved it. But for me personally, I think we should really get away from these typical HK actors line-up again and again (Andy Lau, Sean Lau, Nick Cheung, Louis Koo, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Tony Leung Chiu-wai). It’s time to reward other people who had contributed very well in the industry for some years too. Daniel Wu is also great and should be rewarded soon (actually Louis Koo first).

BN-HY581_0419HK_G_20150419142349

Best Actress

  • Sandra Ng, “Golden Chickensss”
  • Tang Wei, “The Golden Era”
  • Zhou Xun, “Women Who Flirt”
  • Zhao Wei, “Dearest” WINNER
  • Charlene Choi, “Sara”

Opinion: Everybody says its fight between Zhao Wei and Charlene Choi. Both are great. So, I have no issue either of them win. Hong Kong films nowadays are too focused on male actors with themes like gangsterism, police, drugs, martial arts/fights. Hence, there isn’t many films each year that can showcase great acting by the actresses. And Hong Kong should now really focus on pushing on their own actresses rather than relying on the ones from mainland or Taiwan.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Wang Baoqiang, “Kung Fu Jungle”
  • Lam Suet, “The Midnight After”
  • Ng Man-tat, “Aberdeen”
  • Alex Fong, “Overheard 3”

  • Ivana Wong, “Golden Chickensss” WINNER
  • Hao Lei, “The Golden Era”
  • Fiona Sit, “Girls”

Opinion: I’m fine with Ivana being awarded best newcomer. But now, a best supporting actress for her is too fast. Two awards in a year. She is good, and I can see improvement and potential in her acting, but it’s just too much and I don’t find it right. I prefer Wai Ying-hung or Nina Paw or even Fiona to win this rather than her. Have seen her in ‘Golden Chickenss’. Really nothing outstanding. Just a simple funny character and it’s easy to tackle.

Opinion: They should actually allow Chinese films from other countries like Malaysia or Singapore to compete for this one too. Should be renamed ‘Best Chinese Film from outside Hong Kong’. This allows for greater competition. Now, Malaysian Chinese film (like the successful ‘The Journey’ last year) didn’t get to compete. It may stands a bit of chance. At least, it can be recognized a bit oversea.

I didn’t watch many Hong Kong films last year (contested in this 34th awards), and so I won’t provide much judgement. I’m just voicing my personal opinion on who or which film deserved better in certain categories above. Most of the films nominated did manage to win one or more awards this year, unlike last year when ‘The Grandmaster’ took almost all the awards (that’s too much). ‘The Golden Era’ is the biggest winner this year with 5 wins.

There is still huge room of improvement for Hong Kong film industry. But at least, they are much better than our Malaysian Chinese films now.

Fast and Furious 7 becomes the 20th film in history to cross USD 1 billion in worldwide box office.

As the ‘Fast and Furious’ film franchise keeps expanding, each of its subsequent films performed better than the last one, at least in the box office intake. ‘Fast and Furious 6’ released in 2013 grossed over USD 788 million worldwide, and became the 50th highest grossing film of all time. That is already a huge achievement, and no one expects that the latest installment of the franchise, ‘Fast and Furious 7’, released early this month already broke that record in just a few days. It becomes the highest grossing film of the franchise, and also the highest grossing film of the year.

19d9h5wntazo9jpg

How much it gains in worldwide box office right now? In only about 17 days, the film had already grossed USD 1.009 billion dollar. Wow! It has successfully crossed the 1 billion milestone, and it did so in just 17 days. That is really very ‘fast and furious’. Hence, it becomes the fastest film to cross that mark (the previous record of 19 days held by Avatar, The Avengers, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2). The film is now also the highest grossing film by Universal, and the second one by the company to cross the 1 billion milestone (the other one being the popular Jurassic Park movie). It now stands at 19th position in the table of worldwide highest grossing films of all time.

And wait, the ‘heat’ and popularity of the Fast and Furious 7 isn’t coming to an end yet. It is still taking the Number One spot in box office across the world even it’s already two weeks after its release. Its momentum is still staying high, but not until the end of the month when Marvel’s The Avengers (2): Age of Ultron will be released. That is another movie this year that is also projected to cross over 1 billion dollar in box office. Its predecessor had already took over 1.5 billion to make it as the third highest grossing film of all time. Everybody loves superhero movies nowadays, and so I’m sure its sequel can make it big again too in worldwide cinemas. And so, Fast and Furious 7 still has about one week plus to rule the worldwide cinema now.

And after that, I guess its final intake would be somewhere in 1.2 billion, and that would easily put it into the top 10 world highest grossing films of all time. A figure not many people expected, but comes into reality quickly after everyone wanted to see Paul Walker in there as his final film. And not to mention the touching tribute to this late actor at the end of the film. The song titled ‘See You Again’ as a tribute to him is also very beautiful. ‘It’s been a long day, without you my friend….’ Also, the movie is way too awesome with plenty of heart-stopping actions from its start till the end for an intense and thrilling ride while watching it. It’s currently my best film for the first 1/3 of the year so far.

Furious-7-Paul-Walker-2

Have watched both the movie and the song clip above. Many people have even watched them few times! That shows how cool the movie is! And next on is the release of Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron which is just around the corner. I’m going to see it this Friday! Have been waiting for it like ages!

Avengers’ wave came again.

For Malaysians who like Avengers, kindly proceed to visit Mid Valley Megamall right now. I’m sure you will be excited and satisfied once you are there. Why? Because, currently, there is an exhibition going on at the Centre Court themed on the Marvel superheroes that formed the famous group called The Avengers. It is that famous because of the first film of The Avengers trilogy released three years ago that went on to collect over 1.5 billion dollar to become the world’s third highest grossing film.

Now, why these popular superheroes are back? That’s because its sequel (the second in a planned trilogy for the successful film franchise) titled Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released to the worldwide theatres end of this month. Wow…wow…wow…We have been waiting three years for it, and it finally arrived. I’m sure you are as excited as me right now. And let me tell you; I bought the tickets for one of its first few days of release over a month ago, just to get a good seat, to avoid GST charge, and to at least fulfill part of my wish to watch it as soon as possible.

Early critics’ response have came in, and most already praised this sequel for being darker, having more complicated story, and more actions. Wow…that makes us to look forward to it further. After this Age of Ultron, the last in the trilogy would be the Infinity Wars and will be separated into two parts (following the current trend of splitting final chapter into two movies). But for that one, the epic conclusion, we will have to wait few more years. Let’s come back to this Avengers: Age of Ultron. Have you watched its trailers? It looks very good and promising.

Back to the exhibition of Marvel’s Avengers in Mid Valley, the displays are amazing. Here are some shots that I took this week over there if you can’t make it personally to the place. You will see toy figures of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Loki, Hulk, Hawkeye, Agent Romanoff, Nick Fury, etc (with their weapons and accessories). Those famous names in Marvel’s comics. But I think the exhibition should also highlight Ultron, the villain of this coming film. Without him, the film wouldn’t exist. How about other new supporting characters too like Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, etc? I didn’t see them in the displays, or maybe I am not concentrating enough.

Now, people are already forecasting how much this sequel can gain in global box office? It has a big chance to beat the first Avengers for the biggest opening record, but many said that it would not gross more than the first one in final total (1.5 billion). But it will almost certainly earn over 1 billion still. Avengers: Age of Ultron will be out in Malaysian cinemas on 23rd April 2015 onwards. We are even few days ahead to the day of release in United States.

Star of the month: Sammi Cheng. To watch her concert in Malaysia end of this month.

It’s now less than two weeks before the much-anticipated concert by Sammi Cheng on this coming end of April. I have been waiting several months and looking very much forward to it, and finally she will return to Malaysia to perform at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands on 24th and 25th April 2015 (8.30pm onwards). The last time she is here was way back in 2011. That’s four years ago. I have attended her past two most recent concerts (both at Genting too), and of course, I will not miss out this one.

I’m glad that we bought the tickets much earlier as the Saturday’s show is now sold-out and there are only very limited seats available for Friday’s slot. She is my childhood idol. Even till now, I still enjoyed listening to her songs (like mostly on her classics and slow love songs). It is hard not to admire this lovely great singer. She needs no further introduction if you are a Chinese. If you are not, then I’m telling you that Sammi Cheng is a Hong Kong singer, and is regarded as Cantopop Queen (or diva). She enjoyed her success in music career since mid 1990s and went on to win many annual singing awards and had been known as one of the most famous singers in Asia Pacific.

Besides than singing, she is also involved in many past films of which most performed very well in box office, hence people started calling her also the ‘box office queen’. She is popular in mostly romance comedy genre in films and had starred opposite megastars like Anita Mui, Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Louis Koo, etc. Her highest recognition in films is awarded best actress by Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award over a decade ago, and once nominated in Venice International Film Festival for the same category (not to mention nominated many times in Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards). I also enjoyed her films. So, basically, her songs are great, her dance are awesome, and her films are entertaining. She nailed fashion all the time too. Perfect icon for a superstar. How can you not like her?

The only little imperfection she has now is that she is too skinny currently. She needs to add up a bit of weight, but anyway, she doesn’t mind known for being that and ‘flat’ too. Her singing skill is not the greatest but considered good from her in this age (now already in 40s), and I hope that she will perform longer than 2 hours in her coming concert at Genting. And if not, we would all be not satisfied. I’m there for her (now can be called Mrs. Hui since her marriage to long-time partner, Andy Hui is confirmed recently) on the Saturday’s show. In film, I hope she will take on more challenging and out-of-her-comfort roles that will let her acting shines so that she will one day be crowned best actress. She deserved it after all the years.

I find that the blog header of this month that highlighted the GST issue one (very viral in Malaysia) is a bit not nice and isn’t suitable for my blog. Hence, I kept that for first half of the month only, and the last half will be dedicated to highlight Sammi and some shots (images from different sources throughout the world wide web) of her performances (in different outfits) in her recent Touch Mi concert tours at Hong Kong (end 2014 – early 2015). Beautiful, isn’t it? I considered myself one of her fans (not the crazy one), and so, I put up the blog header specially for her.

April 2015 second half blog header

Now, I’m just waiting, day by day, for next week’s Saturday to arrive. That’s the second and last day of her Touch Mi World Tour in Malaysia, and the day I will be seeing her.
