First of all, Happy Good Friday and Easter to those who are celebrating! This year’s Easter has been a joyous moment particularly for the movie ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as it has recently grossed over US$ 1 billion in worldwide box office. This live-action remake of the original 1991 animated movie that starred Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci, Emma Thompson, etc has become the 29th film in history to cross over the 1-billion milestone. The movie has exceeded expectation in the box office and is also gaining positive reception from critics. It is the first 2017 film to cross that mark and soon, there will be another movie this year joining that prestigious list. And that will be ‘The Fate of the Furious’ which is the 8th film in the popular ‘Fast and Furious’ film series. Besides than being currently the highest grossing film of the year, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ also accomplished another record by being the highest grossing live-action musical film ever.

‘The Fate of the Furious’ sees the return of original cast as well as some new members. This movie reminded me again of the death of Paul Walker several years ago, an actor who has been crucial in this film series but died in a car accident. The previous ‘Furious 7’ film concluded with high note and touching ending and is the first of the film series to gain over US$ 1 billion in worldwide box office. Hence, I’m expecting this 8th film to cross that milestone too. Back to this latest movie. It tells about an arrival of a mysterious woman who seduces Dom (Vin Diesel) into the world of terrorism and a betrayal to those closest to him. The movie starred Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, Luke Evans, etc.

Similarly to the previous movie, this film delivered with some intense, over the top and exhilarating action scenes in a scale that no one has foreseen. Cars raining down to the street and a huge submarine chasing a group of cars and a tank. This film series started with some humble car racing moments to extensive gun fights and attacks of high proportion we saw in recent movies. It is going big. Despite it is already being the 8th film, I find every film has its refreshing storyline and different outtake on its action sequences. I also noticed that Hollywood takes on this approach to find Oscar-winning cool-looking actresses to portray villain in big-budget movies nowadays. Charlize Theron as the villain in this movie and then soon Cate Blanchett will be the villain in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ which will be coming out end of this year. There are some hilarious parts to balance things out (and also some adorable moments from a baby). Out of 10 points, I rate ‘The Fate of the Furious’ a total of 7.6.

Recently, I also watched another much relaxing movie called ‘The Boss Baby’. It is an animated movie about a suit-wearing briefcase-carrying baby who pairs up with his seven-year old brother to stop the dastardly plot of the CEO of Puppy Corporation. It’s funny to see a baby with an adult mindset on a serious mission to stop an evil plot, and he is joined by a brother who wanted him to be out of the family due to diversion of his parents’ attention to the baby. The movie is highly entertaining. Certain flaws and plot-holes in this movie are forgivable too. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘The Boss Baby’ a total of 7.0.

Fast and Furious 7 becomes the 20th film in history to cross USD 1 billion in worldwide box office.

As the ‘Fast and Furious’ film franchise keeps expanding, each of its subsequent films performed better than the last one, at least in the box office intake. ‘Fast and Furious 6’ released in 2013 grossed over USD 788 million worldwide, and became the 50th highest grossing film of all time. That is already a huge achievement, and no one expects that the latest installment of the franchise, ‘Fast and Furious 7’, released early this month already broke that record in just a few days. It becomes the highest grossing film of the franchise, and also the highest grossing film of the year.

How much it gains in worldwide box office right now? In only about 17 days, the film had already grossed USD 1.009 billion dollar. Wow! It has successfully crossed the 1 billion milestone, and it did so in just 17 days. That is really very ‘fast and furious’. Hence, it becomes the fastest film to cross that mark (the previous record of 19 days held by Avatar, The Avengers, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2). The film is now also the highest grossing film by Universal, and the second one by the company to cross the 1 billion milestone (the other one being the popular Jurassic Park movie). It now stands at 19th position in the table of worldwide highest grossing films of all time.

And wait, the ‘heat’ and popularity of the Fast and Furious 7 isn’t coming to an end yet. It is still taking the Number One spot in box office across the world even it’s already two weeks after its release. Its momentum is still staying high, but not until the end of the month when Marvel’s The Avengers (2): Age of Ultron will be released. That is another movie this year that is also projected to cross over 1 billion dollar in box office. Its predecessor had already took over 1.5 billion to make it as the third highest grossing film of all time. Everybody loves superhero movies nowadays, and so I’m sure its sequel can make it big again too in worldwide cinemas. And so, Fast and Furious 7 still has about one week plus to rule the worldwide cinema now.

And after that, I guess its final intake would be somewhere in 1.2 billion, and that would easily put it into the top 10 world highest grossing films of all time. A figure not many people expected, but comes into reality quickly after everyone wanted to see Paul Walker in there as his final film. And not to mention the touching tribute to this late actor at the end of the film. The song titled ‘See You Again’ as a tribute to him is also very beautiful. ‘It’s been a long day, without you my friend….’ Also, the movie is way too awesome with plenty of heart-stopping actions from its start till the end for an intense and thrilling ride while watching it. It’s currently my best film for the first 1/3 of the year so far.

Have watched both the movie and the song clip above. Many people have even watched them few times! That shows how cool the movie is! And next on is the release of Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron which is just around the corner. I’m going to see it this Friday! Have been waiting for it like ages!

A very busy week, but lesser pressure now, thanks to ‘Fast and Furious 7’

Sorry for not updating my blog for many days already. I had been very busy attending to design and drawings of my sisters’ upcoming salon shop. After I’m back from work, I had to deal with them till late night, wasting most of my time and effort on explaining many things they find it hard to understand. Couldn’t blame them since it is not their field. Finally, my part is considered mostly done for now, and I can catch a movie for a bit of entertainment this week at least. What’s the most recent movie that is not to be missed? Yes, it must be the ‘Fast and Furious 7’, latest instalment of the popular street-racing themed movie franchise that starred Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Tony Jaa, Tyrese Gibson, etc.

Everyone is also very keen to watch this because it’s the last film for Paul Walker, an actor who died in a single-car accident two years ago while the filming is still taking place. Fortunately, many of his scenes were completed, and CGI, extra effects and his brothers were brought in later to cover the remaining scenes. We wanted to see his last work as we will no longer see him in future films anymore (so sad). And I’m glad that the film did very well especially in the ending scene that is specially created as a tribute to this great actor. I heard many were moved to tears when seeing the flashback scenes of him in the first six films in the franchise and then he drove off to the sunset (very beautiful and meaningful). What a moving conclusion to the film. This film is for Paul.

As for the whole movie, ‘Fast and Furious 7’ is absolutely fantastic. The actions are a lot and will surely put you to the edge of your seat. Eventhough most of the action sequences are over-the-top, but we definitely enjoyed it and didn’t bother of its illogicality. There are gun fights, martial arts fight, street fighting using tools, explosions, collapses, cyber-hacking, and of course, car racing; the main theme of the movie that it never gets away from. So many things, and all are intense. You wouldn’t want to close your eyes for a second while watching this exhilarating piece of work.

There is nothing to comment on the acting as everyone delivered average performances only in this category. This film isn’t for showcasing acting ability. It’s to showcase actions, and it delivered way over as I mentioned earlier. It raises the bar compared to the first six films. The camera works are also very good, particularly highlighted in several moments. James Wan is a perfect choice to direct this film. He is talented and could still direct other genres very well besides than horror movies he is famous for (Saw, The Conjuring, etc). And he is a Malaysian born. ‘Fast and Furious 7’ toppled the rest to become the best film for the first quarter of the year so far. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Fast and Furious 7’ a total of 8.0. Crazily intense, exciting and moving. This movie is going to make huge money in box office worldwide. Don’t miss this one.

Movie review: Fast and Furious 6 (2013)

‘Fast and Furious’ franchise which is a series of action films centers on illegal street racing and heists had come this far, to the release of its latest sixth instalment recently. Fast and Furious 6 follows a professional criminal gang led by Toretto who have retired following their successful heist previously, but remain wanted fugitives. A cop then offers to clear the group’s criminal records and allow them to return home in exchange for helping him to take down a skilled mercenary organization led by Shaw and his second in command, Toretto’s presumed-dead lover Letty. The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Chris Bridges, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, and John Ortiz (to name a few).

I thoroughly enjoy this film as the director, Justin Lin had maintained to have the story carried out in a much more action-oriented direction as usual. Well, it is the action involving those fascinating cars on roads that appeal much successful to audiences now, and he did that right. There is whole lot of amount of action-packed scenes in this movie, racing your heart out as you watch, as some intense moments are very exciting yet quite unbelievable to a certain extent from this film. Well, film can go for anything, eventhough it’s a bit too exaggerated. Well, that’s the ‘wow’ factor we can observe from this.

The story which continues from Fast Five goes very smooth and well in this one, which now takes place mostly in London (Fast Five was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). However, I find there is too much emphasis on Letty, on which there are too many scenes involving of how she get into the villain side this time, and how she finally reunited back with Toretto’s group. It would be better if her parts are cut short a bit. Let’s get back to the action sequences. All that are brilliantly delivered in this story eventhough some are too unbelievably risky to the characters. Well, when there is no risk, there would be no heartstopping moments. So, I have to say this movie seriously performs well in terms of its action approach. And when such film is good in action, then it succeeds.

Fast_Furious6

This time, its encounter between a group of criminal (good side) against another group of criminal (bad side). It’s like fighting your evil twins using racing talents, attack weapons, and crazy tactics each side has. That’s interesting. The performance by the casts are solid, which is expected since the casts have done all these similarly so many times in previous instalments already. However, I can assure you that the actions now in this film are much climax-reaching and crazier. It’s a fun ride watching this. There is street racing (of course), gun attacks, fighting sequences, then comes also clash between cars and destroyer tanks, and finally the ending part that involves a huge plane as well. (sorry for a bit of spoiler here)

I am enjoying it generally. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Fast and Furious 6’ a total of 7.7. A great action-packed film. Ohh, there is an extra scene in the middle of end-credit. So, stay a while to wait for it which indicates the possibility of another sequel and how the whole flow of these six instalments works (didn’t understand my point, watch it to find it out). And yes, it’s confirmed that there would be Fast and Furious 7 which is predicted to be released next year. Wow, that is fast too! I think this franchise is getting much more popular compared to the release of its previous five instalments. This ‘Fast and Furious 6’ is going to gain a lot in box office.

Movie review: Fast and Furious 5 (2011)

Posted in Miscellaneous with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 20, 2011 by vincentloy

Nicknamed as only ‘Fast Five’, ‘Fast and Furious 5’ is an action-packed film focusing on racing cars like its predecessors. However, this time, the latest installment to the franchise is not merely on street racing theme, with emphasis in transforming  the franchise into a heist action series that utilized cars in an attempt to attract wider audiences. That is a right move and now this latest film of the franchise garnered more grossing as well as more positive reviews. If it is only about street racing, then I would not go for it, but now it is an action-packed film, so I’m watching it.

It left me no disappointment at all. This film is released few months ago, and is now even already not available in cinemas. I did not have any interest in the beginning for it, but as soon as I noticed the good rating and reviews for it from many websites, it’s time for it before my holiday ends. The film follows Brian, Dominic  and Mia as they plan a heist to steal $100 million from corrupt businessman Hernan Reyes along with their team members while being pursued for arrest by U.S. DSS agent Luke Hobbs. Below is the official trailer for the film:

Of course, we would still be seeing a lot of impressive cars from the film, which are specially used for racing at top speed. It is not only about racing as mentioned earlier, it is about racing to get off from the police, chasing by the police, as well as emphasis on action set-pieces like gun fights, brawls and the plan of heist of the $100 million. The first thing I wish to compliment on from the film is definitely the action scenes! The escape from the train after the cars are successfully stolen is marvelous. The escape of the main casts from the police and the hired gunmen over the poor housing at Rio de Janeiro is breathtaking. The plan on getting into the highly secured police station for the $100 million is mind blowing. The escape from the police chasing behind on the roads at the final climax is awesome. All the action scenes are just great.

Nowadays, America’s movie producers started to have their venue of filming out of US. Rio de Janeiro, a beautiful city of Brazil is now an often choice for them as the setting is just marvelous, with the urban areas surrounded by hills and beaches, with the highlight often shown on screen is the Statue of Christ, the Redeemer on top of a hill overlooking the beautiful city. The huge sprawling urban housing along the slope of the hills there became just a right place for the shooting of one of the action scenes in the film. However, the film is indeed showing much on the negative side of the city, like drug trafficking, corruption, poverty, violence and freedom in using guns. I would feel very dangerous going to that part of the city after watching the film.

Back to the film, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss any part as the story progresses, because in every portion of it, there must be something exciting or essential going on, like action scenes, or scenes involving huge character’s development. Even the recruiting of new members into the team and their several thought plans on their mission are shown in the film to be very convincing and interesting to the audiences. There is no parts that are unnecessary for the film which took around 2 hours, just at the right proper amount of time. I wonder how much mess, how many infrastructures are destroyed and how many cars are damaged from the film, because the intensity of the action scenes (mainly car chase scenes) are just enormous…thanks to the strong performance by the casts, and the level of damage created to allow for such scenes that steal our attention.

Everything is so serious in here, in this film? Not really….there are some humors inserted at the right moment for a laugh or two, and to ease up the tension which builds up till the end with the continue of their mission which appears to be almost impossible. Anyway, the focus on CARS is still very much present. This is another good film of the year, as it is also among the best reviewed film of the year so far too. Well worth watching with mainly all credits to the action-packed scenes especially at the final climax before the end. Out of 10 points, I would gave this film, 7.3.
