Benjamin Yuen and Mandy Wong won Most Favourite Lead Actor and Actress for both Singapore and Malaysia region.

TVB held its 50+1 Anniversary Gala yesterday to celebrate the station’s 51st birthday on November 19th, 2018. Besides than the usual performances and massive gathering of TVB artistes, there was this one new segment where the Most Favourite Lead Actor and Actress awards for Singapore and Malaysia were presented.

Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards and TVB Star Awards Malaysia had been cancelled this year. However, Malaysian and Singaporean audiences can still vote for their favourite lead actor and actress of the year and the result were revealed on the Anniversary Gala. The reason I’m excited to watch the gala live yesterday is not because of the games, dances, gigs, songs or lucky draws but because of this revelation of winners.

I am already expecting Mandy Wong from her performance in Threesome (I didn’t watch this series though but heard a lot of praises for her) to win although I prefer Ali not to go home empty handed (Ali Lee did well in Who Wants A Baby too). It is also disappointing of not seeing Selena Lee being placed in top 3 at least (her role in Succession War is brilliant and very likable). It would be nice if Mandy and Ali each won one for Most Favourite Lead Actress. In the end, Mandy Wong swept both the Singapore and Malaysia awards. The same goes for Most Favourite Lead Actor of which Benjamin Yuen took both too. This is the one that got me very upset. Benjamin is definitely not on par yet to win and he even swept two now. This is absurd. This result is an obvious outcome from below average male performances in TVB dramas this year. If Kenneth Ma’s ‘The Exorcist Meter’ get to air this year and not last year, he would have won all the Most Favourite Lead Actor’ and even ‘Best Actor’ awards easily this time around. This shows that timing and luck are very important.

So it looks like Mandy Wong is now the definite frontrunner for Best Actress on next month’s TVB Anniversary Awards while I still see Alice Chan as a strong dark horse this year. Ali Lee may sneak in for the win too but her chance seems to be dropping. Rounding up Top 5 will be Nancy Wu and Grace Wong. Benjamin Yuen is now the frontrunner for Best Actor (I sincerely hope he doesn’t win, he is certainly not best actor material yet) while the other four to be in top 5 would be Vincent Wong (last year’s TV king), Joe Ma, Carlos Chan and Ruco Chan. Anyone but Benjamin for the win. Benjamin had won much more than he deserved by now already.

TVB celebrates its golden jubilee with its grand anniversary gala.

TVB, the largest television station in Hong Kong celebrates its 50th anniversary recently in a grand fashion. Its dramas have been accompanying me for over 20 years. Despite the criticisms of having poor dramas in recent years, facing lack of talents and with many good artists leaving the station, it is undeniable that the station is the home that have trained many superstars we saw today. It is undeniable that the station is the home for all the classic series that we remembered till this day. It is undeniable that the station has had impacted lives of over millions of Chinese not only in Hong Kong or China but also throughout the world where there is Chinese people.

Since it is TVB’s grand golden jubilee, I would not want to miss the chance to watch its 50th Anniversary Gala last evening. The scale of the show is noticeably upgraded but there is still more that can be done. Since it is their golden jubilee, they should have some sort of fireworks display too to celebrate this significant occasion. The show should have been extended to 3 hours rather than the typical 2-hours time to allow for more performances. Celebrities who attended the show are Liza Wang, Eric Tsang, Carol Cheng, Nat Chan, Simon Yam, Ray Lui, Wayne Lai, Kristal Tin, Nancy Wu, Ruco Chan, Kenneth Ma, Vincent Wong, Benjamin Yuen, Wong Cho Lam, Ding Dang, Pakho Chau, Nancy Sit, Michelle Yim, Susanna Kwan, etc. Besides than Simon Yam and Ray Lui, I was actually expecting more heavyweight stars (formerly TVB artists) to attend the show.

It is also very obvious that the front segment of the show is heavily inspired by the movie ‘La La Land’ with the similar musical score. The performances by the 50 male artists and the 50 female artists are too ordinary and boring. They could have done much more (something challenging?). It is also very obvious that the singing by the artists are pre-recorded (I can see clearly the lip-sync by almost everyone). The ones not doing that are the three singers performing at the last section of the show and hence, you will noticeably hear poor live singing. And what are the three singers (from various countries) doing here? I thought they would be singing classic TVB theme songs. Totally irrelevant for that part. While I admire the ‘Hidden Heroes’ segment that honors all the less-known frequent faces in the past dramas, the way it is executed by ‘Fuk Luk Sau’ team (Wong Cho Lam, Louis Yuen, Johnson Lee) is awkward.

Besides that, too much time has also been wasted for excessive advertisement and segments showing the prizes that will be handed out for the evening (the 2-hour show is already not enough!). The one great section of the show that I enjoyed is the ‘recruit’ sketch by Eric Tsang, Kristal Tin, Wayne Lai, etc. The scene with Kenneth Ma and Bob Lam is particularly hilarious. The scene with FAMA who tries to imitate Carol Cheng and Eric Tsang is also funny to watch. This year’s gala show is certainly much better than last year but I was still slightly disappointed that the organizer didn’t want to further elevate it up. And when is this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards going to be held? Until now, there has been no news or date announced for the awards. There is speculation that the awards will be pushed to January next year. Does that mean from now on, the TVB Anniversary Awards will be held on January every year or this schedule only occurs for this year? This will mess up the standard annual schedule.

I’m particularly excited for this year’s best actor and actress race (forget about most favourite male and female characters’ categories). Out of sudden, Kenneth Ma is rising to be a top contender for this year’s awards due to his strong performance in the currently airing ‘The Exorcist’s Meter’. Before that, Vincent Wong is at the top of the pack in terms of the chance on winning the best actor since he has won at the Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards and is rumored to win the same at TVB Star Awards Malaysia to be held this week. I’m picking Kenneth as he has been much longer in the industry that Vincent and he is really good in ‘The Exorcist’s Meter’ to my surprise. I find that it is a bit too early to hand in best actor to Vincent Wong. For best actress, I’m rooting for Kristal ever since I saw her performance in ‘Destination Nowhere’ early this year. There is no other strong contenders but I have a feeling that Kristal may not win in the end. What do you think of the gala show and the best actor and actress race this year?

TVB 47th Anniversary events…

TVB, the main television company in Hong Kong will hold its 47th anniversary gala tonight. (indicated as ‘nearing 48′ in their birthday logo as number ’47’ isn’t quite nice.) It will be surely a star-studded show with over hundreds of their artistes attending and some of them even performing in the gala, seen as an annual party to celebrate the success of the station spanning 47 years. So, the new episode of ‘Come on, Cousin’ and ‘Overachievers’ will only be released tomorrow as the time-slot is given for the gala. Happy Birthday, TVB! You have been giving me countless of nice dramas from my childhood years till now.

Just finished watching the gala that lasted two and a half hours. The gala this year is very interesting with its game theme. Even the singing parts (usually boring for me) turned out amazing tonight. Much better than the galas in the past few years. The most surprising segment is when Wong Cho Lam suddenly proposed to his girlfriend, Leanne Li ‘live’ and she agreed. Romantic, memorable and wonderful. Overall, it is fun watching the gala this year.

The TVB Anniversary Awards is also around the corner. It is usually held in mid December, and I’m looking forward to see who will be crowned TV King or Queen this year. However, the nomination list isn’t released yet till today (it will be out very soon). But everyone is already starting to predict who will win this year. Competition heats up and the current favourite to win for Best Actor is Roger Kwok (Black Heart, White Soul) and Best Actress is Charmaine Sheh (Line Walker). Are they your choice too? Other hot contenders for Best Actor currently are Ruco Chan and Raymond Lam. As for Best Actress, the dark horse is Linda Chung.

Recently, TVB has also organized their TVB 2015 Sales Presentation, delivering trailers and hints of what the station would air next year from dramas to programmes. Disappointingly, there isn’t many attractive series released next year except for one that really stood out, ‘Lord of Shanghai’. Why? Because it is a big-budget production and it starred Anthony Wong (Film King), Wayne Lai (TV King), Kent Tong, Kenneth Ma, Ron Ng, Myolie Wu, Louisa So, etc. Have to wait really long for that which is expected to be released in November next year. Another upcoming drama named ‘Limelight Years’ is also looking good.

Also not to forget the recently released TVB Calendar for the year 2015. Unlike previous years, in which TVB would round up some of its most popular artistes to pose in themed background settings, the station decided to modify the format and promote upcoming dramas instead.

Time flies. After weeks of voting, the campaign and promo tours are finally over for the upcoming TVB Star Awards Malaysia which will be happening this Sunday (23rd November 2014) on 8pm at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. I have voted and I have won the tickets too. But I won’t be able to attend the awards presentation. It is expected that many TVB artistes will attend it. Check my previous blog post here: , if you want to see the awards’ nomination list, accompanied with a bit of my thoughts and predictions.

TVB 46th Anniversary Gala and Awards 2013 nomination list

It’s been 10 days since I last updated my blog here, which is something quite unusual for an always active blogger like me. I decided to reserve more posts on December and to end the year with exactly 1300th post. Hence, lesser posts this month.

Okay, back to the main topic. TVB held its annual anniversary gala successfully yesterday. For this year, it’s TVB 46th birthday. Its series over the years have been part of my entertainment for at least ten years of my life. Despite the station being put in bad light in recent years for poor quality of dramas and programmes, I believe TVB would still continue to enjoy its success and popularity but seriously needs to work on complaints they received.

The TVB 46th Anniversary Gala held yesterday (19 November 2013) from 8pm to 10.30pm and was aired live in Malaysia here too (glad for it). It was reportedly attended by over 400 artistes, the biggest party TVB ever hosted but I believed most are unfamiliar faces. The heavyweight stars present are definitely the four veteran artistes; Liza Wang, Eric Tsang, Carol Cheng and Nat Chan together with Wayne Lai, Kenneth Ma, Linda Chung, Raymond Lam, Kate Tsui, Myolie Wu, Moses Chan, Kevin Cheng, Bosco Wong,  Alan Tam, Kay Tse, etc. This year, the gala focused on presenting more big gifts or rewards (branded watch, glasses, jewelleries, TVB stock, luxurious car, apartment unit) to its artistes to win their hearts and continuous support to the station.

There were also dance and acrobatic performances, magic show, soccer segment, and music collaborations in the two and a half hour gala. However, I find these are rather dull and some appeared even awkward and nonsense. Mostly, only young unknown artistes performed while the famous ones just sat by the side and enjoy the show without any direct involvement. This is somewhat disappointing. Further to that, Eric Tsang whom would usually be making fun and tricks in a comedic section did not do so this year. Overall, the show was boring, except for the extra part where the present 400 artistes would be voting for their Best Actor, Best Actress and Most Talented Artiste.

It is something of a popularity award based on TVB peers’ choice. Kenneth Ma won the Best Actor, Krystal Tin won the Best Actress, while Helena Law won Most Talented Artiste. Very good selection of winners, but this result will not plays any part on the TVB Anniversary Awards next month. Wait a minute; the awards presentation will be held on 16 December, and surprisingly, the nomination list is still not released out yet. It’s less than a month to go. I will immediately post the nomination list here once it is out. Check back soon.

Yesterday’s TVB 45th Anniversary Gala Show 2012 is so boring!

TVB’s annual anniversary gala is the only chance every year to see most of  TVB artists gathering together to celebrate TVB’s birthday with multiple performances, competitions and lucky draws. I have been watching its gala show every year since 2008 and I was quite excited yesterday after I reached home from work yesterday’s evening. The TVB 45th Anniversary Gala Show was broadcast live yesterday’s night. But after watching the show in two and a half hours, I am seriously disappointed.

The show was so flat and plain boring. The first few minutes showing the clip introducing the height TVB had achieved so far is quite impressive and that is an obvious sign to show to TVB’s other rising competitors at Hong Kong how successful and experienced they are. Next, as usual, we see all the attending artists lined up in front to greet TV audiences, together with the welcoming of the same usual emcees of the night, four big brothers and sisters (Liza Wang, Dodo Cheng, Eric Tsang, Nat Chan) and several others. Then, the show officially started. Before that, a drum and dance performance by famous artists is delivered at TVB’s studio city. It’s a good start…Sir Run Run Shaw (the founder of TVB) isn’t present. He is too old, not able to make it to the show probably.

Next, we have several artists singing some very famous theme songs from dramas in 1980s to recent years. Some songs are really classic. Then, things started to get boring. The acrobatic performance by the females over the net is nothing! Only very little stunt is performed from this segment, particularly from Kate Tsui whom is in highlight on this show, indicating that she had a big chance of winning on the upcoming anniversary awards. Where is Tavia and Michelle, the two other strong competitors for best actress this year? Really, there is nothing interesting at all from this lengthy show!

There is definitely a segment for the Fuk Luk Sau (three Gods); Wong Cho Lam, Louis Yuen and Johnson Lee. And it is disappointing that they didn’t really provide us any entertainment or funny stuff this time as I’m expecting hilarious things from them. Even the part of parody to the two anniversary dramas, ‘The Confidant’ and ‘Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles’ is unappealing. Well, I do still had a little laugh over the four actors (Wayne Lai, Roger Kwok, Moses Chan, and Michael Tse) acting as four wives based on ‘Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles’ drama. That is the only funny thing I saw from the whole show.

Even the sketch this year isn’t entertaining or funny. The idea of having a baby care center with Eric Tsang portraying as the nanny to babies (Moses Chan and King Kong) with dramas between them should be interesting. The way they tried to put things to make us laugh is too brainless and plain in the end. Eric Tsang is as usual throwing those powder stuff or liquid, bullying and acting real harsh to other artists (poor King Kong and Moses Chan). Nothing special. Then, for the audiences (us), we don’t really care who wins at the several lucky draws from this show. There is too much of things exaggerated from that part which I find it quite annoying. This year’s gala show emphasizes a lot on introducing new young artists, rather than treating the show as a true celebration of what TVB had achieved so far. A big letdown. A poor show.
