More updated details for KL118 Tower.

Finally, after months and months of speculation and secrecy surrounding Malaysia’s plan for the next tallest building of the country, more details had been revealed recently from the officiating ceremony. What is the project that I’m talking about? It’s the KL118 development. Now, it is renamed to PNB118 since PNB is the name of the owner’s company for this project. Well, I prefer KL118 more as it has more international appeal than ‘PNB’. Nobody knows (not only foreigners but also locals) what does PNB stands for.

Also known as ‘Warisan Merdeka’ (Heritage Independence), this development is located on a site just adjacent to the historic Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara. It is also located nearby to some very old buildings like Victoria Institution, Methodist Boys School (my former secondary school), Chin Woo Stadium, and Petaling Street (Chinatown). The project has been receiving heavy criticism due to its location on low-lying area which is also full of historical buildings and that this new modern supertall would not fit into this site context. I agreed. This project also receiving strong objection as the money put into this can be more beneficial for other purposes as the city does not need another supertall yet.

The iconic feature of this development would be the construction of an 118-storey tower, now named PNB 118 Tower. The final height of this skyscraper is still not confirmed but it is now fixed to be between 600 metres to 650 metres. Some sources said 610 metres or 630 metres while some even said it would be 644 metres tall which would make it even taller than the Shanghai Tower, the current world’s second tallest building. No matter what the final height is, this PNB118 Tower would still easily be the country’s new tallest building as well as one of top five world’s tallest buildings once it is completed. And it is announced recently that it is expected to be completed in 2024. Years ago, it is planned for completion by 2020 to coincide with Wawasan 2020 (Vision 2020) when the country would become a developed nation by year 2020. However, the project faced delay and it’s getting back on track now. It is now officially under construction.

The tower is designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects, an architecture office based in Melbourne, Australia which is previously famous for designing Eureka Tower in Melbourne. The design is also not that well received as many people commented that it is too simple, too glassy and do not possess timeless elegance like what Petronas Twin Towers achieved. I agreed to these opinions too. However, after its official rendering and an animation clip of the tower are out recently, some changed their mind and started to like the design. I’m one of them, but I still think that the design needs further improvement especially on its treatment to the top where it meets the spire. The spire is also a bit too long and out of proportion in comparison to the building form and volume. I knew it is just there to increase a substantial height for the building just to have it to be placed higher in the list of world’s tallest buildings later on.

So, here below are some new (latest) renderings, plan view and models’ images of the PNB118 Tower and also an animation clip for it by RSP Architects, the local design consultant for this project.

Looking forward to see this new skyscraper dominating the skyline of Kuala Lumpur as soon as possible. Hmm…I suddenly changed my mind and think that KL needs a new supertall now since Petronas Twin Towers have been here for almost two decades already. However, it is undeniable that the twin towers are still elegant and remain as icon of the country forever.

Movie review: How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

This year is filled with great animation movies! First, we have ‘The Lego Movie’ of which many claimed had raised up a bar on the standard or quality of animated productions. Then, we have an entertaining ‘Rio 2’. And now, we have another film I can called utterly satisfying and well deserved of a huge thumbs up from me. It’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’, a sequel to the first film in 2010. The first one was great, and I can assured you that this sequel is no less better (or some say, even better).

The story starts five years after the event on the first film (have to watch the first one before continuing on this to know better on the progressing story flow and characters). Now, Hiccup and his best buddy, Toothless (Night Fury dragon) love to travel far to discover new lands, and they do…an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider (whom turned out to be his mum…opps, warning…more spoiler ahead). They have also learnt of a group of people planning to control all the dragons with evil intentions, and so they have to find themselves in the center of another battle to protect the peace.

This is an interesting story. The plot as it develops is engaging and had everyone paying attention including the adults. Yes, this movie is more for the younger kids, but I’m sure the older demographics will enjoy this as much as the children too. There are some cool scenes (especially of Hiccup flying with Toothless beyond the clouds). Those moments are magical and wonderfully displayed as though I can feel the same as they are. There are also a lot of hilarious parts that are certainly making this very entertaining (but some of those are lame and cheesy). Also showing more on dragon-to-dragon interactions this time which are lovely and mostly funny to watch too. The movie also didn’t disappoints with good amount of emotions and dramatic climax scenes particularly in the end. (how good it is that Hiccup’s family is reunited as he found back his mom whom was thought to be dead earlier, but later on in this film, his dad, the chief was killed). A lot of ups and downs, that contributes to an exciting adventure for the audiences. A solid story that makes this as successful as its predecessor film.

The visuals are great. The sound effects are good too. And I’m glad that part of the soundtrack is reusing the tracks from the previous film (but with a bit different tunes) which brings back nostalgia to this film. The voice-over performances are outstanding and the wonderful addition of new characters make this sequel fresh and captivating. It looks like there is nothing bad of this film that I can reveal. There are only some minor not-so-good issues here or there. Everything is positive generally. No wonder the film now had been receiving near universal critical acclaim. Truly deserving. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ a total of 8.0. (I very seldom gave a rating of over 8 points to a film). Hence, this is a remarkable achievement I gave to this animated movie. This sequel retains or even replenish the charm from the first film to another level. I’m glad that the third installment of this successful franchise is going to be out by 2016. A two-years wait.

New header for the blog…

Now it’s already in the festive season, everyone is in festive mood, everywhere is in festive atmosphere (eventhough this does not happens much in Malaysia). Haha….a new header for my blog…trying to create year-end atmosphere to my blog…hope you have the same festive mood with me too…

Too bad there is no winter in Malaysia, hot everyday…want to be cold, everything depends on air-conditioning…X’mas atmosphere in Malaysia is bad, nothing much decorated here…except for some famous malls in KL and other areas (check out my previous post on christmas decorations in few malls at Bukit Bintang). I like the atmosphere at Hong Kong and Singapore (examples in Asia). Eventhough I have not been to these places during christmas season but from pictures and advertisements, I already can feel it eventhough I am so far from the places now.

What do you think of my new header? This is actually an image obtained from internet, hence it is not of my own. It is actually animated, more beautiful, but I have to edit it by adding some words, hence no more animated for the header. Anyway, you can see the animated one below:

Click on the image above, then you will be directed to the full size of the image, animated…

Cool, isn’t it?….thanks to the one who created this animated image…actually, I have found a lot of christmas-related images…here are some of the pictures I found:

Simple, yet colourful and creative greeting with black background, enough to catch our attention…

The five images above are awesome to present a chilling atmosphere on christmas season….

Haha, don’t go so far, time for me to back to Malaysia mentally…haha…5 more days, countdown to christmas and 12 more days to a new year, 2010!!!
