Movie review: After Earth (2013)

When ‘After Earth’ is released to theatres worldwide few months ago, my sister did suggest this movie to watch that time but then I turned it down after looking at how bad it is reviewed by the critics. But then, there are also a small group of reviewers who find this movie quite enjoyable too and then my sister who had watched it later also said that it’s not bad. Hence, I had to watch it to know where do I stand. And my position is over at the minority. ‘After Earth’ tells the story of a crash landing that leaves Kitai and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

After-Earth-Is-Scientology-Propaganda-Movie-Says-Review

This science fiction action adventure film is not on par with something that ‘Avatar’ delivered, but it still had its own decent storytelling. I think the story in this ‘After Earth’ runs quite well and properly developed here rather than concentrating too much on just a plain adventure. It’s not messed up as what most people think. It deals with technology (it sets far in the future), it deals with survival in the threatening environment (sets for a perfect and challenging action), and it also involves traumatized father-and-son relationship for a solid and elaborated plot to keep us watching. I didn’t find anything wrong from the story development. But then, I find the scene in the beginning at the spaceship quite awkward for no clear reason.

Perhaps, the major problem here is the cast. Will Smith is a good actor. However, the limit of his character (more like a supporting role since it is his son that did the adventure) here put him to a situation to be ignored. Hence, all eyes are now on his son, Jaden Smith whom is no doubt an inexperienced actor yet. People don’t need to blame him for his poor acting in the film. He is still young and he tried his best. It is a mistake to let him take over 100% of the movie screen time of which he is incapable of. However, I try to focus more on the adventure and action rather than on acting. Hence, I am not really that offended by his acting here. I prefer him to try on supporting roles first in future films. It is not easy to be the one person to carry the whole story forward. And his failure on it is what brought this movie to misery to the critics. I’m still okay.

‘After Earth’ offers awesome visuals. Great and quite realistic looking CGI. The movie also delivers with some exciting adventure eventhough I am hoping for more. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘After Earth’ a total of 6.3. A mark much higher than what most movie reviewers given out there. I take it lightly and so I actually find this movie quite entertaining, enjoyable and successfully helped me to relax on a night after stressful and tiring work.  Trust me; it’s really not that bad. Perhaps, some people may be consumed by how bad M. Night Shyamalan (movie’s director) performed on his previous movie like ‘The Last Airbender’. Don’t mix that up with this. ‘After Earth’ is better. Last but not least, I also find a quote from this movie quite interesting and meaningful; ‘danger is real, but fear is a choice’.

Movie review: The Karate Kid

A good way to reduce my stress from today’s morning B.Tech final exam, time to go cinema and watch an awesome movie…yes, we pick the right choice….The Karate Kid is really a good movie and worth watching…

I didn’t hear much on the release of this film, probably due to lack of advertisement…but I think it is a remake from previous original films back to years or even decades ago…remake sometimes may be good, but always will be worst…but it does not applies on this film….this latest film is definitely cool…with addition of some humourous scenes in it…the fighting scenes of Dre (Jaden Smith) is quite good too…

The story or the plot development of the whole film is good, from fantastic beginning mentioning how Dre adapts himself to new environment after moving to China till the end when he overcomes his fear in beating opponent in karate competition with addition of kungfu elements with help of his master (Jackie Chan). I always like action film involving Jackie Chan. Eventhough there is not much fighting scenes of him since he is getting old already, but he still plays important role in the film….the most humorous character is Dre’s mom whom had great expression in acting in the film…

Overall, it’s another great film….go watch it if you want to see action-based, friendship-based, moral-based film…

Opening of Burj Dubai tomorrow, 4th January 2010

The long-awaiting opening of Burj Dubai finally comes, one more day, tomorrow, 4th January 2010 will be the official opening of the skyscraper, the world tallest building and even the world tallest man made structure. The date is chosen, as the same date of the four anniversary of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum becoming the ruler of Dubai, the day that is dear to hearts of everyone, as mentioned by Emaar chairman, Mohammed Alabar. The tower is designed by skyscraper-pro architect, Adrian Smith.

Picture 1: Overall look of the building, Burj Dubai.

The opening ceremony will be organized as a grand ceremony, to mark the opening of the tower, the landmark and masterpiece of Dubai. The current height of the building is 824.55m to be exact, and it can be raised, so that other future buildings will never grab the world tallest title from this tower easily. The construction of such a tall building, in such a condition (high wind, dust, on a desert) is really an engineering breakthrough. The architecture is marvelous too, based on the design of Arabic flower. Burj in Arabic means tower.

Details of the opening ceremony:

Time: 21.00 United Arab Emirates time (17.00 GMT)

Date: 4th January 2010 (Monday)

Location: Burj Island.

Events: Fireworks, light shows, and new song for the Dubai Fountain, world tallest fountain.

Picture 3: Fireworks installed on the tower.

The first phase will be opened by tomorrow, and the commercial area in the building will be opened for business. Some areas are not completed yet, on the interior works. Landscaping works have been completed around the tower and Burj Island, and fireworks have been installed on the tower. The fireworks used will be the first of its kind…how does it looks like for a building with such a great height with fireworks blowing out in creative styles…it will be very amazing!

Tomorrow, is the big day, for Dubai, for United Arab Emirates, and for the whole world too, especially to the fans of skyscrapers. This building isn’t skyscraper, it’s a superscraper, first in the world, exceeding 800m in height and can be seen 100km away. It is not only a building, it is an icon, a symbol of human achievement!

I will be gathering information and writing a post, on the opening ceremony, after the event, probably on the next post, with all fantastic pictures to be expected. The information and pictures from this post is mainly obtained from this informative website, www.burjdubaiskyscraper.com
