Chile Earthquake at 8.8M

The greatest earthquake recorded after the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami (9.0M), the Chile Earthquake measures up to 8.8 magnitude in Ritcher scale. The earthquake struck Chile at 03.34 local time, early Saturday (27th February 2010).

                              

The earthquake can be felt in the Chilean capital, Santiago, as well as in many Argentinean cities, and as far as to Sao Paulo, Brazil, located more than 3000km away. Besides that, tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries. The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet declared a state of catastrophe. Currently, 78 deaths are confirmed and the number is expected to rise tremendously.

                      

Many buildings have collapsed, as well as electric cables, causing blackout all over the region. Santiago International Airport had also been damaged and closed for operation. At first, tsunami warning is declared over the region, then, later extended over to Pacific Ocean, involving Asian countries, like Japan, China, Taiwan, Phillipines, Indonesia, and Australia. Tsunami up to few metres high are expected to hit any time, in the period of 24 hours after the earthquake.

                       

Tsunami waves were spotted at shores of Chile and at the coasts of few islands few hundred kilometres away from Chile. Many aftershocks were recorded too after the main earthquake. The damage is horrible, many buildings have collapsed, as well as bridges, highways, etc. It’s just about one and a half month after the disastrous 7.0M Haiti earthquake that killed over 230 000 people and left over one million people homeless.

From the pictures above, it is obvious that the disaster is catastrophic, and the death toll currently rises to over 300. This earthquake is among the top 10 most powerful earthquake ever recorded in history of mankind (number 7).

    • Prayers achieve nothing.
      Religion is a lie that they told you when you were an innocent child. just like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. It just helps humans come to terms with their own mortality.

      What you need to do is human action. Donate, or go there and help rebuild if you can. Support your government if they decide to send aid (instead of complaining).

      “prayer” achieves nothing except make YOU feel better.

      i live at malaysia, so i’m not there…i found a lot of pictures from the online news…not 64 aftershocks…only around 20 aftershocks recorded…yes, there is another smaller earthquake at japan

  10. HOWEVER, changes in axis wobble occur over thousands, tens of thousands, of years. The last time it happened was 800 million years ago, I think.. Look it up, I may be wrong.. People saying that any of this has anything to do with an earthquake, or to do with this “2012” thing, are just not making sense however: that is the point..

      • how does “pray” help.. SERIOUSLY. We are in 2010. We know the cause of an earthquake like we know the scientific causes of rain, thunderstorm, and tidal waves.
        The makers of religions did not understand ANY OF IT.

        Nowadays any 10 year old school pupils from Chile has more scientific knowledge than the people who wrote the books of religion.

        The 10 year old kids CAN NOT hear your prayers. You have to find an alternative plan of action if you want to help.

    • I learned it fr tv today but seems I was busy watchinng the Vancouver Olympics so when the news came in, Haiti comes in mind, China and Philippines. How destructive this kind of natural enemy is? After that, it will pass but I hope there are other part of us to fight this, to overcome the fears, hopelessness and sadness. Sometimes, faith in God and a sincere prayer for the world makes a difference in its own hidden other ways.

  22. I’m fed up with people saying we should Pray.
    If you believe in God then you justify why he should do this to us. You tell me why 300 people should die today in Chile, and countless others in Haiti. You tell me why we should pray to a God who does this to the poor, whilst the rich who have everything never suffer.
    You tell me what kind of a God would want to suppress a country like my Chile, that has fought to rise from the swamp of poverty, only to be forced to the begging bowl of the americans.

    I have family in Concepcion. I have not heard from them since this began. This is not the action of a benevolent God, this is the inevitability of tectonic plates. Nothing more. You keep your religious prayers to yourself until you can explain why something like this should happen to innocent good people.

  26. I’m from Chile, but I’m in the north so nothing happened here. right now the President Michelle Bachelet said that deaths increases to 708 and it will continue growing. so sad

    let’s pray for them
    I have family there, but I already talk to them, they’re fin just scared

  35. To all the commenters bashing God and prayer . . . NOW IS NOT THE TIME or the PLACE. This is NOT the place for your anti-religion fanaticism. On a side-note, your atheism is a religion as well. I don’t know why God lets things like that happen. I’m not Him, neither are you. But perhaps instead of bashing people against the rocks verbally, let’s all unite and seek to bring comfort and relief to those that experience these traumatic experiences.

      • I agree. Although I never leave my beliefs behind, and don’t encourage others to do so, when the beliefs are paired with contention and strife in the midst of a disaster–it’s time to realize that it could have been us in that situation and for some reason we must have been called to be the support and relief. That’s when it’s time to put the negativity on the back burner and realize we truly HAVE to much to be thankful for. It could have been me.
