Bad day lighten up with a great movie!

Today is the day for my final presentation for my design studio this semester. After days of insufficient sleep and constantly glued to my laptop working for this assessment, the judgement time finally arrives. However, things turned out to be bad this morning when I get quite harsh criticisms from the lecturers. I’m open to feedback but they should have said it out to me on my design during the tutorial sessions earlier. And then, here they came stabbing not only on my design, but also on almost everyone’s else. I’m shocked to see them complimenting on somebody’s works that are obviously lacking in quality and quantity and then criticizing heavily on people who produced serious amount of works. They even asked us ‘what went wrong?’. My answer deep down in my heart would be ‘You guys are the ones who went wrong!’.

I’m hoping my lecturers won’t be seeing this. It’s just me voicing out my frustration of the day. I’m quite confident of my level of works (I put in more time and effort on it than I put on my previous two design studios) and I didn’t see what’s happening today coming to me. It’s literally 80% negative comments and only 20% of consolation words. I knew they are trying to force us to improve further and face the harsh reality, but that is something that I’m not ready to face after putting so much effort and passion on it. They will never understand. I’m also surprised to see them not agreeing and again harshly criticizing on most of the other people’s works too, some of which are very well done from my point of view.

Let’s not talk about them anymore. It’s over. Arrghh…it’s not. This final studio presentation this time is not actually the ‘final’ as we have the portfolio submission that requires immense amount of new stuff from us and covers a huge percentage of our grading of the unit for the semester. This studio is really giving me all sort of pressure and literally headache. We are supposed to have this studio end by now and not prolonged with more works to be done. This is so unlike the last two design studios. Our lecturers are making life so much more unnecessarily difficult for us.

The only positive thing to cheer me up today after the studio’s presentation is the ‘Wonder Woman’ movie. Finally, it’s the time for me to get some much needed break and went for a new movie. There are so many cool movies out now but ‘Wonder Woman’ is my top priority. And I didn’t choose wrongly. It’s such an amazing movie that not only strikes with lots of actions but also strikes right to the heart. Gal Gadot is impressive and spectacular as the titular character. I don’t think there is anyone else that could portray this superhero better than her. She is not only here for the attacks to save the day, but also here to carry the whole movie with passionate acting and engaging performance. And not to mention that she is incredibly pretty and hot too. I’m melted. Chris Pine is also great in portraying as her lover, Steve Trevor.

I think this is the first time that DC movie is doing it right. The previous DC superhero movies are just average and not as good as Marvel ones but this ‘Wonder Woman’ came out as an exception to my delight. The plot is nice and easy to grasp, the chemistry and romance between the two lead cast is amazing, the actions are awesome, the visual effects are cool, the score are intense and dramatic, the emotions are there, the messages are there. There is also one unexpected major plot twist regarding the revelation of the main villain in this movie. I did not see that coming. And that is great. What more do you want? There are even some nice hilarious scenes put in to create a lighter tone which is an approach not very much attempted in DC movies’ style that prioritizes dark and serious mood. It’s a good addition to the movie to keep everyone entertained from beginning till the end. I literally have not a single bad words for this movie. Well done to DC! Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Wonder Woman’ a total of 8.2. It is very engaging and thrilling! I love it. This is one cool awesome movie.

Finally had an awesome stress-free weekend. And a movie review for ‘Doctor Strange’ (2016).

After having done my final submission for my design studio on last Friday, I’m finally having a great stress-free weekend. It’s something that I don’t get to see for the many past weeks. My second semester is going to end soon and now I can start to feel all the burden and pressure going off slowly from my mind and body. Anyway, there are still two submissions before I can officially call it the end of the semester. But for right now, I think I deserve some time to rest and chill and this is the perfect weekend for it. It’s also my second last weekend here in Perth before I fly back to Malaysia for my year end break.

My day was fully occupied yesterday. It started with a shopping in Westfield Carousel mall alone while waiting for my friend to come over and fetch me. It’s nice to shop alone as you have no distraction. But clothing on sale here are pretty expensive and I couldn’t buy a lot. Then, I joined my friends for an over 2-hours badminton session. There are three courts for us and so everyone of us have to be like almost playing non-stop this time. It’s an intense session but fun. Then, I’m back to the mall for lunch and accompanying my friends for shopping this time.

Then, I spent the rest of the day attending the early Christmas gathering in my friend’s house. It’s a potluck dinner and everyone brought a Christmas present to be exchanged. I’m having a great time and after it ended, we were all feeling exhausted after a long busy day. Time passed like faster than usual yesterday.

Just this morning, I head back to Carousel mall again, but this time, is to watch a movie. I watched ‘Doctor Strange’, a Marvel superhero movie that I’m much anticipating due to the critical acclaim the film received right now. The film turned out to be very good from the great acting by the main cast (Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen). Those are the actors and actresses that I like and they are all in this movie. The visual effects are fantastic. I think it’s the film with best visual effects this year so far and I think it stand a chance to win Best Visual Effects in the Oscars. The movie relied a lot on CGIs that most parts of them reminded us on ‘Inception’ movie too. I have to really compliment the effort put on the graphic of this movie that seriously paid off.

The story is fast-paced, some scenes are hilarious, and the characters’ development is there eventhough it’s a bit not enough for Rachel and Mads’ characters. The actions are brilliant as expected based on Marvel standard. Overall, the movie is really good and it revealed the fifth Infinity Stone in the whole Marvel cinematic universe that will leads to the Avengers: Infinity Wars. There are also two scenes after the end of the movie not to be missed. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Doctor Strange’ a total of 8.0. It’s exciting and it’s considered something fresh and out of typical dimension in Marvel’s formula. I’m interested to know how are they going to bring in Doctor Strange to join the Avengers team later on.

Raya holiday is over! And a movie review for Ant-Man (2015).

Posted in Miscellaneous with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 22, 2015 by vincentloy

Ahhaa…time flies. Raya holiday is over. Despite not going out for a vacation as we usually have during Raya holiday, we still have plenty of activities to go through for the days. I went to Raya open house by Prime Minister at Putrajaya (my earlier post already described about it), tried on a newly opened and very cheap Japanese restaurant in my neighbourhood (the sushi were good), played and won quite a lot in rummy game with family, ate my favourite fruit; durians which are only available during its season, went to Malacca for a quick food trip with my sister, and watched two movies. I have written a review for ‘Harbinger Down’ film earlier, and now it’s time for ‘Ant-Man’ by Marvel.

‘Ant-Man’ is the latest film by Marvel after ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ this year, and it introduces a new superhero to the spotlight from the already huge ensemble of superheroes in Marvel Cinematic Universe. ‘Ant-Man’ up to the big screen! In Marvel story, once a person wear the Ant-Man suit, he can shrink to size of an ant and revert back to original human size, can have telepathic communications with insects and be the leader of the insects’ army, and is very quick in combat when he is in ant-size. In the movie, Scott Lang whom is previously a burglar have to redeem himself for his daughter by taking up the job by Dr. Hank Pym as an Ant-Man to save the world by preventing the Ant-Man technology from landing into the hands of bad people.

Ant-Man-13

The movie performs well and distinguishes itself from the many other Marvel films already released earlier mainly because of the ‘getting small’ part. That’s the main element of the story not present in other superhero films thanks to the ability of the titular character to shrink in size. Superheroes are mostly big, but now we see a superhero as small as an ant and he is great in it! The plot is quite typical and predictable whereby we have a villain (that’s a must) with his own shrinking-in-size suit creation named Yellowjacket, then a doctor that realizes a big problem and find a guy who wants to give a good image to his daughter to be the hero and save the day. Not that complicated and I like how the story in this movie links back to many Marvel subjects (like Hydra, Avengers, SHIELD, etc). The connections are plenty and are awesome.

antman

When we see a superhero film, we will certainly concentrate on its actions! Yup..Ant-Man delivered on that. It’s a fresh thing to see superhero battling it out in a small scale while people hardly notice it. The ‘strangeness’ and the ‘smallness’ from that situation are advantages for the film. Eventhough some action sequences are too quick and messy (many things going at once that can get me dizzy sometimes), but overall I enjoy them. Paul Rudd is wonderful in portraying the Ant-Man, while the other cast also did considerably good works in their respective roles. There are also bits of humour throughout the movie for a good entertainment. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Ant-Man’ a total of 7.7.

Not bad. I didn’t have any high expectation before watching this movie and now I’m quite impressed. Well done, Marvel. You produced another brilliant work from a new superhero despite not receiving very good box office return this time. Anyway, Ant-Man would still now join the Avengers in future movies. And if you haven’t watch it, please stay until the very end of the credits of the movie for one mid-credit and one post-credit scene.

So hyped by the new trailer of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. Certainly the era of superhero movies by Marvel and DC Comics.

Posted in Explosive News and Results with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 15, 2015 by vincentloy

Recently, many people especially fans of superhero-based comics were hyped of the first trailer release for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, a movie featuring the two titular characters and will be released on March next year. The teaser released much earlier revealed nothing much about this highly anticipated movie. Finally, its first full-length trailer is out from the recent Comic-Con 2015 event. I myself watched the trailer few times to figure out how the story might goes and also to inspect all the details revealed in the trailer alone. If you haven’t watch the trailer yet, here it is:

I’m quite excited for this movie. There’s Batman (Ben Affleck) fighting Superman (Henry Cavill)! Who wouldn’t like it? But none of them is the main villain of the movie. That role goes to Lex Luthor, portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg. He is the one that said the creepy lines ‘The red capes are coming…the red capes are coming’ before the end of the trailer. Previously, many people voiced their doubts and objections for the casting of Ben and Jesse. After this trailer, I myself personally think that both of them will nail their respective role. Many now are still not convinced by Lex but I think that the director wanted this villain to be something not typical, hence chosen Jesse to take on that role as he is great in portraying nerdy billionaire (Lex is someone like that). But honestly, I’m not happy with that ugly hair. Anyway, he is going to be bald later in the movie.

People are also quarreling over across social medias on who will win in the fight if Batman and Superman really battle it all out. The red caped one is with power out of this world, can fly, can shoot laser beam from the eyes, extreme speed and massive strength. The black caped one is with huge strength, huge wealth, intelligent mind and advanced weaponry. I would say the red caped one wins. Sorry, Batman fans. Ahhaa…Wonder Woman would also be in this movie. But her role reminds me of Catwoman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, the one that has Christian Bale as the Batman. It’s just to add in a female aid to prevent movie from being too male-driven. The trailer looks awesome and what we can do now is to just wait and see.

No doubt, this is the era for superhero movies! There is at least two superhero movies released every year. The market is strong for this genre right now. These movies will generate huge bucks in worldwide box office no matter how bad they performed to critics. First we have Marvel cinematic universe (MCU), a series of superhero films based on publications by Marvel Comics. It began much earlier (in 2007) than DC cinematic universe and had already produced 12 films (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel’s The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man) with 10 more (Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, untitled Spider-Man film, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity Wars – Part 2, Inhumans)  in various stages of production.  MCU has up to now grossed over US$ 8.5 billion, making it the highest grossing film franchise of all time.

DC cinematic universe (DCCU) comprising films set in fictional shared universe based on characters in publications by DC Comics started way later in 2013. It has currently produced only 1 film (Man of Steel) with 12 more (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League Part 1, The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, Justice League Part 2, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, untitled Batman film, untitled Man of Steel sequel) in various stages of production. DCCU is like following the footstep of MCU, hence creating a competitive environment in this particular genre of movie. Marvel is light and friendly while DC is always going in darker tone.

Spotlights are on both Marvel and DC to deliver on all these planned new superhero-based movies which are sure to make our upcoming years in cinema fascinating!
