Getting myself sick again…and then there’s just one movie for this weekend.
Hmmm….really hate it…hate it when you are getting sick in a weekend. Weekend is the time for me to relax and enjoy but that is not what I’m going to experience in this current weekend as I get cold and my throat isn’t feeling well again. Just not long ago (I guess only a month ago), I felt into the same illness. And now, it came back to hit me. That’s too frequent. But if I’m to think of it positively, then getting ill during weekend is actually on the right timing since the break allows me to rest more and hopefully recover from the illness.
Meanwhile, I’m currently organizing a trip to Singapore with my parents on this coming Christmas holiday. This would be my first time taking charge of a trip and also paying all of the charges of the trip. This would also be our first time not following any group tour when going oversea for a vacation. It definitely hurts my wallet especially in the present time when SGD is so high compared to RM currency. Anyway, I’m getting rid of my ungenerous attitude and would spend in hope of a nice short 4 days 3 nights trip to Singapore.
Well, we have been to Singapore before for several times but in those occasions, we didn’t really truly visited the country which is just not far south from us. We only spent very short amount of time everytime we went there in the past. On this coming Christmas holiday, hopefully the trip proceeds smoothly as we are planning to visit many tourist attractions there like Marina Bay Sands, The Merlion, Chinatown, Gardens by the Bay, Orchard Road, Clarke Quay, Sentosa Island, S.E.A. Aquarium, Singapore Flyer, etc.
On the other hand, I have only manage to watch one new movie this weekend, which is one lesser compared to the previous 2-movie per weekend routine I have recently. The movie is ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’. It is a youth comedy drama film based on a novel of the same name that debuted in 2015 Sundance Film Festival to a standing ovation. It eventually won the grand jury prize in that festival. Looking from all the positive reviews it had, I will certainly go for it as this movie reminds me of another successful youth film last year titled ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. But in the end, I think ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is better.
Anyway, ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ is also worth to watch as it delivered some kind of uncommon charm and insight. It tried itself to stay away from typical romance storyline from two good-looking teenagers and I buy that idea. In this movie, high schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds himself altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer. No boring romance here as it is all about friendship and its impact to one’s life even after your friend has passed away.
I learnt some meaningful messages from this movie. The cast also did brilliant job in their respective roles especially Thomas Mann as Greg, the main lead. Well, he is another young breakout star to watch for. However, this movie looks not as good as it seems from my perspective. The plot is not dramatic or engaging enough and I somehow isn’t much ‘connected’ to the movie in many parts. The sad scenes in the end are also not that moving and didn’t reach my expectation. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ a total of 7.0.
