Where are the world’s best airports?

Airport is not only the place you would go when you have to fly to somewhere else. Nowadays, there are many facilities integrated into airport terminal buildings that makes them an enjoyable place to visit even when you are not boarding any plane. Let’s take our recently completed KLIA 2 airport here in Malaysia for example. Despite being criticized for over-spending in building the airport and also frequent water ponding issues, the airport is certainly a nice place to shop as there is a huge retail mall within the terminal too. There are also many dining places, some relaxation facilities, lounges and hotel in the airport to provide wonderful experience to visitors. KLIA2 is part of KLIA (obviously) to be the main international airport for Kuala Lumpur and it is currently ranked 19th best airport in the world by Skytrax World Airport Awards.

That is considered a very good ranking for our KLIA out of hundreds or even thousand of airports available across the world. However, did you know that KLIA is in Top 10 ranking three years ago. I wonder why the drop in ranking for the airport over the years…So, where are the current Top 10 World’s Best Airports? Here’s the list from Skytrax, compiled from various frequent air-travelers and professionals across the world, and taking into accounts from categories like cleanliness, staff, transit experience, terminals convenience, shopping, dining, security, immigration, baggage delivery, leisure amenities, etc:

Out of the 10 above, I have visited four of them; No. 2, No. 4, No. 8 and No. 10. For me, the extra thing I can do in a particular airport is to observe its architecture…its design and structures. In terms of that, No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 10 impress. If there is one particular ranking which ranks airports based on its architecture, then I think KLIA may stand a chance in Top 10.

By the way, I think I’m quite a frequent visitor to airports since I used to travel oversea once a year. I have also visited Dubai International Airport for few times since that is the transit point before heading to Europe, and I have had trip to that region twice in the past. I’m surprised that the airport is ranked at 39th since I think it is quite another remarkable airport. On the other hand, Singapore Changi is famous for always topping the ranking annually. But I don’t think I would have any chance of visiting the airport since Singapore is so near to Malaysia and I can just drive south to the island-nation than taking a flight.
