Box-office milestone – Transformers: Age of Extinction crossed 1 billion mark in film’s grossing.
Breaking news for movie fans – Transformers: Age of Extinction surpassed US$ 1 billion in grossing worldwide. Well…I’m not surprised at all. This is expected even before the movie is released. Or I should say I already predicted that once Michael Bay said he will be doing the fourth installment of this popular ‘Transformers’ film franchise. Before I’m revealing the current amount of grossing that ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ has obtained so far, let us take a look back of how its predecessors perform in box office last time.
The first movie of the franchise is named simply as ‘Transformers’. It was released in 2007, and had since grossed over US$ 709 million. A very strong box-office performance already for a stand-alone film before future sequels follow. Worldwide audiences’ interest to this robot-based film then grows steadily, and so the idea for more films to continue the story is materialized. The second movie, named ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ was released two years later, in 2009. Despite receiving poorer reviews, it grossed more with final intake of over US$ 836 million.
Then, Michael Bay didn’t stop and returned in 2011 with the release of the third film of the series titled ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’. Not only that this one performed awesomely in box office, the film was also getting better reviews. The film eventually grossed over US$1.123 billion worldwide, becoming the first film in the series to surpass the amazing 1-billion milestone. Since then, Michael Bay had said that he will stop, and that ‘Dark of the Moon’ will be the last. That decision didn’t last long, as he changed his mind and made all the Transformers’ fans across the world happy again with a confirmed release of the fourth installment.

And this is it. ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction. Released on June 2014. As of current (less than two months of its release to worldwide cinemas), the film had grossed over US$ 1.005 billion worldwide. Much of it came from United States of course and also from mainland China. Well, that is mainly due to parts of the movie being filmed in Hong Kong, China and there were many scenes in the film that are closely associated to the Chinese. Well, a smart decision. The movie had attracted a huge market; China. But this movie is getting poorer reviews back again.
Anyway, ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ became the 19th film in history to gross over US1 billion worldwide. I’m predicting that by the end of the film’s run in cinemas, it would have final intake of around US1.2 billion, an amount higher than its predecessor, ‘Dark of the Moon’. Hmm…that’s a huge amount! Other film to be released this year that has high potential to also join 1-billion club would be the last chapter of ‘The Hobbit’ film franchise; ‘The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies’. It is set to be released by end of this year. However, this one would still be no match to ‘Transformers’ power on leading the year in terms of grossing.
And yup…it is confirmed that ‘Transformers 5’ is currently in development and is slated for release in 2016 or latest, 2017. They are maintaining the flow of getting more sequels to come, as this franchise is a sure box-office hit no matter how bad the movies stand for critics.
