Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition 2013 ended with a bang!

Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition 2013 (PIFC) came to a close with a bang recently after it was held in 6 days from end of August till early October 2013. A total of six countries participated; Malaysia, South Korea, France, China, United States and lastly United Arab Emirates. Each countries was allocated 25 minutes of pyrotechnics display over the beautiful setting of Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia. It was launched by the Prime Minister at night of Merdeka Eve, with Malaysia being the first contestant.

I didn’t purposely go there to watch the fireworks show (it’s quite far), but I did watched the performance by every participating countries from online clips. This is how I find Youtube very useful. People get to upload video of the fireworks to Youtube very quickly, and the good news is some are even captured in high definition. Awesome! I like to watch fireworks. But if a fireworks display gets too long, I will find it boring especially in the middle part as it is very obvious that the organiser will save the most till the last. Hence, less exciting and plain display in the middle that actually took most of the time. And this happened to all the contestants in the PIFC.

It would be much better if 15 minutes time frame is given instead of 25 minutes that is a bit too long. What I do? I just watched the first few minutes, and then skipped all the way to the last three minutes of each shows where the ending climax will be. Ending is always the part where organiser blows off huge amount of fireworks that covers big portion of the sky that is already blanketed with thick smoke. Accompanied with loud noise, bright sparks and the synchronised music (no longer heard), the finale is always the most exciting section. That is the only ‘wow’ I can get from each participating countries. Some images of the fireworks competition (click on image for more visually appealing view):

Looks fantastic just by looking at the fascinating photographs above. Result is Malaysia won the competition. United States was placed second, and the third place is a tie between China and France. I’m not sure whether this result is rigged or seen unfair, but from what I watched, every performance is average for me. There is no outstanding contestant and there is no poor performance too. I hope for participation of more countries in future and do look forward to this competition to be made annual (to be continued in following years). It is quite well-received by the crowds.
