Movie review: World War Z (2013)

World War Z is an apocalyptic horror film based on a 2006 novel of the same name. It’s basically a movie on zombie outbreak in a global scale. It has been quite long from the last time Hollywood made decent zombie films like 28 Days Later, Zombieland, I Am Legend, etc. And this World War Z would be the latest addition, which I considered to be one of the best in this particular category in recent decades. The movie stars Brad Pitt as Gerry, a former UN investigator who must now work to find the origin and cure to the zombie-like virus pandemic that overwhelmed the world population.

I was already stunned at the first time watching its trailer. Wow…the trailer itself already shows thousands of zombies climbing up a very high wall, thousands of them chasing the survivors, many of them trying to get on a flying helicopter…and so much more. It’s a must watch for me who prefer zombie film than ghost film. I can assure you that nothing from this movie is ‘little’. Things are at ‘max’.  Usually in a zombie movie, there would be only like ten or the most, a hundred of zombies you would be seeing and dealing with in one scene. But this one, it’s in matter of hundreds or thousands in several parts. Everything,..every encounters with those mad-running infected are in massive scale or epic proportion. That just blow the things up! And I’m happy of it.

Even when Gerry encounters a small group of infected in certain places, it’s going to be really exciting too. I personally like the last part when Gerry accompanied with two other person had to enter a wing of lab building overrun by the infected to locate pathogens which could be helpful (not going to reveal further spoiler). That part is my most favourite, as tension does build up, and I do really felt the intensity there. That’s how a successful zombie film should delivers. However, it would be better if a slightly bigger group came along while some of them got bitten in the middle. This would adds up more crazier fun to this climax-reaching part. The scenes at The Jerusalem particularly in the plane is heart-stopping too. The make-up to those infected characters is quite terrifying but I don’t wish to observe to the detail.

I enjoyed this film. Brad Pitt delivered a solid performance, but I don’t like his appearance in long hair. It looks messy.  Things started out very fast; the first five minutes introduced me to Gerry with his family while the city they were in is still very usual. After that, it’s all the fun part for fans of zombie movie. Nothing boring. Even when there is a bit of it, you will forget it straight away once the scene jumped into encounters with the infected again. Generally, it’s a quick intense horror-action movie. I have to admit that it lacks a bit of substance, lacks a bit of character development. But that’s not the things we wanted to see the most from this kind of film. I wanted to see how intense and exciting this zombie outbreak is. And the film nailed it very well. Out of 10 points, I rate ‘World War Z’ a total of 7.5.
