London 2012 Paralympic Games concluded…congratulations to the winning Malaysians in the games!

It must be not right if I didn’t cover even a single post regarding the London 2012 Paralympic Games. I realized I have been writing quite a lot over the Olympic Games last month while have been neglecting the very much importance of this Paralympic Games, dedicated to physically-disabled athletes.

The first Paralympic Games was held in 1960 at Rome, Italy. So after a quick calculation, this latest edition of the games held in London 2012 is the 14th. The games would be held not long after the end of Olympic Games in the same host city elected for the Olympic Games. For London 2012 Paralympic Games, it began on 29th August and concluded yesterday on 9th September in 12 days of great sportsmanship and courage performed by the physically-challenged athletes all around the world.

Paralympic Games is usually known for receiving much lesser attention, poorer media coverage and lesser audiences. However, this seems to be not the case for London 2012 Paralympic Games. As reported, the number of tickets sold to events of this games are much higher than in previous editions of the games. Newspapers are now started to report more from this Paralympic Games, in amount almost equal to that of Olympic Games. Well, that is good for the games. It gets more attention until to the point that I am even going to have one post at least for this games, on the day after it is concluded in a very spectacular closing ceremony as reported by worldwide media.

Let’s have a say over Malaysians’ achievement in the games. Malaysia did fantastically well on this games by winning a silver medal and a bronze medal, a record similar to that in Olympic Games ended last month. That particular silver medal came from Hasihin Sanawi in archery sport while the bronze medal came from Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli in athletics sport. Eventhough it is not the best performance of the country in history of Paralympic Games, but I’m sure it’s very good enough. Congratulations to the two winning Malaysian athletes for bringing home two Paralympic medals to make the country proud!

In overall medal table, the Asian powerhouse, China topped the table by winning 95 golds, 71 silvers and 65 bronzes. Wao…that is too much! Russia came second by winning 36 golds, 38 silvers and 28 bronzes while the host nation, Great Britain came third by winning 34 golds, 43 silvers and 43 bronzes. Looking at that result, it seems almost impossible to compete over China which put the others so far behind in medal count. The end of Paralympic Games also marked the conclusion of summer sporting fiesta in London for the year 2012 and all eyes would now looking forward to the next Olympic and Paralympic Games, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016.
